Is your spa living up to your expectations of success?  What should your expectations be? Successful spas add to the hotel’s overall success in occupancy, “edge” to the property and guest loyalty along with department profitability.   A quick look at the barriers will help you analyze your spa’s role in your overall property image and accomplishment.

Award winning spas don’t just happen – they are planned, executed and managed with vision and precision.  My article in the Hotel Business Review "5 Major Barriers to Your Spa's Success" discusses the barriers that will prevent the spa at your property from achieving the level of business and service that establishes the spa as a successful property amenity.  Although there are many possible barriers, we will discuss the five that are most crucial. These barriers will drag heavily on your momentum to upgrade the spa’s contribution to you your property.  While some may be an easier fix, others will be more complicated, depending on the property.  You may be reminded of the adage that each barrier is “like a hurdle in a steeplechase, when you ride up to it.  If you throw your heart over, the horse will go along.”

Spa identity, level of service, integration into the property, response to industry trends and recognition of financial opportunities are either barriers or strong attributes, depending on management’s current approach.  By taking a closer look at the importance of addressing each of the barriers and then deciding to “throw your heart over” the barriers you can enjoy even greater success for your spa and the entire hotel.  Guests will have many reasons to choose the hotel and to return.

Responsible environmental stewardship is not only an integral part of doing business at Dolce International; it is the core of who we are as a company...

Accommodating Seniors - Rethinking the Meaning of Hospitality for Older Consumers

By Jeffrey Catrett, Dean, Les Roches School of Hospitality Management, Kendall College, Chicago

The War Generation, raised on Depression and World War, may have accepted somewhat stoically the difficulties of navigating through an America accustomed to focusing on youth culture, but Baby Boomers have never yet accepted anything anyone has tried to impose upon them and have had the economic might to get their way. As 78 million consumers enter their later years, expect to see sweeping changes in the treatment of greying populations...
