Coastal Hotel Group Executive Invited to be Professor for a Day at University of Missouri

Ed Schwitzky Shared Experience With Hospitality Industry Students

SEATTLE, WA, (January 12, 2010) – Coastal Hotel Group Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ed Schwitzky visited The University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources as a “professor for a day” and instructed students on the latest trends in hotel marketing on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009.

Schwitzky’s visit was part of the University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources’ Professor for a Day program, which invites alumni who have excelled in their careers to return to campus and share their knowledge with current students. With more than 25 years of hospitality sales and marketing experience, Schwitzky was an ideal candidate to give students insight into industry changes.

“It’s an honor to return to my alma mater and speak with enthusiastic students diving in to hotel and restaurant management,” Schwitzky said. “The University of Missouri offers a stellar hospitality program, and I’m proud to share my experience and contribute to these students’ education.”

Speaking to a Hotel and Restaurant Management class, Schwitzky stressed the importance of using different mediums and messages to market to segmented audiences and the need to engage consumers in unique ways. He also visited the Gathering Place, a bed and breakfast that serves as the educational capstone experience for hospitality students, where he provided feedback about daily operations.

Hotel Human Resources: The Biggest Challenges
The economic challenges of the past four years have led many hotel companies to re-examine the ways in which they do business and how they deploy talent. In many cases, the work did not go away and fewer people were left to carry on the tasks that had previously been shared among many. As we work our way out of the recession and look forward to a healthier economic environment, there is an understanding that despite recovering business levels, we may never see the return of former staffing levels. This "new norm" of operating with leaner teams has led Human Resources professionals and people managers to look at career development and growth opportunities in a new light. The March Hotel Business Review will take a look at some of the strategies being used by successful hotel brands, and techniques human resource directors are currently exploring.
