GVB Showcases Guam at L.A. Travel & Adventure Show

TUMON, Guam - February 11, 2010 - More than 20,000 travel enthusiasts will get the opportunity to learn about Guam this weekend as Guam Visitors Bureau hosts an exhibit at the Los Angeles Times Travel & Adventure Show, the country’s largest consumer travel and trade showcase.

On Feb. 13-14, GVB will join 500 other exhibitors at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where destinations around the globe will be highlighting everything from safaris to scuba diving, wind surfing to wine tours, and archaeology excursions to tropical escapes.

“The L.A. Times Travel & Adventure Show is the cream of the crop when it comes to travel and trade showcases,” said GVB General Manager Gerald S.A. Perez. “On average, two-thirds of the consumers who attend plan to travel to a foreign country in the next year, and about 46% have spent more than $5,000 on personal travel in the past year. It’s a great place for us to teach people about all Guam has to offer while scouting out visitors at the same time.”

The event not only allows GVB to showcase Guam as a travel destination but to also show support for Continental Airlines and NWA/Delta Airlines, carriers who rely on seat capacity on regular flights from the U.S. mainland to Asia.

In 2009, after meeting a small group of potential travelers who showed some interest in Guam, GVB learned that more than a dozen of the Los Angeles residents were on-island within two weeks.

“The consumers who come to the Travel & Adventure show are affluent people who love to travel,” Perez said. “Our job is to show them not only why they should plan their next vacation in Guam, but why they should keep planning vacations in our region. When people come to Guam, they often take advantage of the opportunity by hopping on another flight to explore Asia. That not only helps us, but it helps our airline carriers as well.”

GVB Marketing Manager Pilar Laguana is scheduled to host a presentation for potential travelers titled, “Guam, Where America’s Day Begins” on Feb. 13 and 14.

GVB, which is sending two representatives to Los Angeles, has participated in the L.A. Travel and Adventure Show for the past five years. A representative by Continental Airlines-Guam will join the group.

Hotel Human Resources: The Biggest Challenges
The economic challenges of the past four years have led many hotel companies to re-examine the ways in which they do business and how they deploy talent. In many cases, the work did not go away and fewer people were left to carry on the tasks that had previously been shared among many. As we work our way out of the recession and look forward to a healthier economic environment, there is an understanding that despite recovering business levels, we may never see the return of former staffing levels. This "new norm" of operating with leaner teams has led Human Resources professionals and people managers to look at career development and growth opportunities in a new light. The March Hotel Business Review will take a look at some of the strategies being used by successful hotel brands, and techniques human resource directors are currently exploring.
