Former presidential appointee brings proven record to innovative business development firm

Salisbury, MD, March 15, 2010 – The Knowland Group, a leading provider of business development solutions for the global hospitality industry, has recently hired Brian Marriott as Director of Communications. Marriott will lead the communications department in developing and implementing strategies to promote Knowland’s innovative collection of professional business development software, services and methodologies.

Marriott comes to Knowland with over 15 years of experience in media relations, public speaking, and strategic communications. Previously he served as a presidential appointee in the Federal Communications Commission, working as a special assistant for media relations to Michael Powell, Chairman of the FCC. In this role he led the commission’s public affairs program, including relations with the public, press, Congress, and other government agencies. He later was the national director for publicity and media relations for AARP, acting as their national spokesperson. Most recently, Marriott worked in the DC office of the global consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

“We are very pleased to have Brian head our communications department,” said Knowland Group CEO Michael K. McKean. “His extensive experience with all types of communications will serve Knowland well as we present new and innovative business development processes, tools and techniques to the global hospitality industry, particularly when it comes to group or event bookings.”

Marriott received his Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from Northwest Missouri State University and has extensive experience as communications director on multiple high-level political campaigns. He will be working out of the company’s McLean, VA offices.

Hotel Human Resources: The Biggest Challenges
The economic challenges of the past four years have led many hotel companies to re-examine the ways in which they do business and how they deploy talent. In many cases, the work did not go away and fewer people were left to carry on the tasks that had previously been shared among many. As we work our way out of the recession and look forward to a healthier economic environment, there is an understanding that despite recovering business levels, we may never see the return of former staffing levels. This "new norm" of operating with leaner teams has led Human Resources professionals and people managers to look at career development and growth opportunities in a new light. The March Hotel Business Review will take a look at some of the strategies being used by successful hotel brands, and techniques human resource directors are currently exploring.
