Landmark to Manage Makena Beach & Golf Resort, Maui

Will Assume Management September 16, 2010

MAUI, Hawaii, Aug. 30, 2010 - The Landmark Hotels Group has been appointed as the new operator and management company for Makena Beach & Golf Resort

The 1800 acre resort is now owned by a group of investors led by a subsidiary of AREA Property Partners, Honolulu based Trinity Investments, LLC and Stanford Carr Development, LLC.

Landmark has a long history in Maui, having built and managed The Embassy Suites Maui as well as the former Kea Lani Hotel & Resort. Today Landmark operates hotels and resorts in Mexico as well as in Hawaii. It is the management company for The Kahala Hotel & Resort on Oahu.

Shawn Sweeney, Landmark Senior Vice President of Operations, will oversee the new management group at Makena. Already on site is David Mellein, Corporate Controller and Director of Projects, Todd Sherman, all of whom have called Maui home in their career with Landmark. Glynis Esmail, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, will oversee the sales and marketing activities of the Resort.

"Makena is a very special part of Maui and so much of the island's early history is rooted in this area. For our Landmark team, it feels like coming home," explained Sweeney. He further elaborated that plans are in hand to update the 310 room hotel. "While this will not be an immediate refurbishment, we intend to make a guest experience difference with the resources we have. The resort has always had a tradition of service and the employees have gone through so much uncertainty in the past few years. We intend to work closely with the hotel's union and to re-institute training programs so that the Makena Beach & Golf Resort can become one of the truly great hotels in Hawaii."

About the Resort:
Makena Beach & Golf Resort is situated on 1800 acres of the southern shore of Maui in the Wailea-Makena district of the island. The hotel offers 310 guestrooms and suites, each featuring private lanais, and commands views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as vistas of Maui's diverse landscape and the 10,000-foot Mt. Haleakala. The resort also features championship golf on the acclaimed Makena Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr., 18-hole course that runs along the Pacific coastline, adjacent to the hotel. With stunning views from nearly every hole, the course is renowned for its ancient Hawaiian rock walls, natural gullies and stream beds, which were incorporated into the course's design.

Hotel Human Resources: The Biggest Challenges
The economic challenges of the past four years have led many hotel companies to re-examine the ways in which they do business and how they deploy talent. In many cases, the work did not go away and fewer people were left to carry on the tasks that had previously been shared among many. As we work our way out of the recession and look forward to a healthier economic environment, there is an understanding that despite recovering business levels, we may never see the return of former staffing levels. This "new norm" of operating with leaner teams has led Human Resources professionals and people managers to look at career development and growth opportunities in a new light. The March Hotel Business Review will take a look at some of the strategies being used by successful hotel brands, and techniques human resource directors are currently exploring.
