Forte Specialty Contractors Completes Construction on Carbone at Aria Resort & Casino

Contractor completed first Carbone restaurant outside of New York three weeks before the scheduled completion date, saving the owner half a million dollars

LAS VEGAS, NV. June 1, 2016 — Forte Specialty Contractors, a Las Vegas-based construction company specializing in building for the experience on behalf of restaurants, nightclubs, museum exhibits and themed, experiential venues, has completed construction on Carbone, a $4 million, 10,000-square-foot Italian-American restaurant located within the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. This opening marks the first location outside of New York for the Greenwich Village-based restaurant.

Forte's scope of work included the demolition of the existing restaurant, Sirio, in addition to the tenant improvement build-out of Carbone. The New York subway-themed restaurant was “glitzed-up” for Las Vegas and includes three separate rooms, all crafted to embrace their own unique style. Pops of red within the opera-style booths and chairs are complimented by gold booth seating and a one-of-a-kind, vintage Venini chandelier imported from a car dealership in Italy and installed in the center of the main dining area. Within the blue-themed room, subway tile flooring and gold leaf-accented mahogany wood line the room, and specialty coffers were designed and installed to allow for special lighting features which added to the ambiance. A third dining area was created with black and white patterned walls, balanced by sleek black chairs, chandeliers throughout and gold curtains which can be closed to create a private dining experience.

“Carbone is a unique type of restaurant which embodies the style, flavor and sounds of the 1950s, immersing guests fully into the experience,” said Scott Acton, CEO of Forte. “Due to our breadth of expertise in designing out-of-the-box structures for restaurants throughout Las Vegas, we were able to complete the project three weeks ahead of schedule and under-budget, saving the owner approximately a half million dollars.”

This project presented a unique set of challenges to Forte; however, because of the diverse makeup of Forte's project team, which incorporates the skills of artists, architects and engineers who all bring a different element to the project, Forte was able to suggest atypical alternatives and solutions to the client. One of the main challenges this project presented was the shimmering dome in which the chandelier hung from in the main dining area. The client had a specific look and texture in mind; however, the fabric originally selected by the client for the dome would have caused the sound to bounce because of the acoustics, allowing customers on one side of the room to be able to hear the conversation happening on the other side of the room. Forte identified this flaw in the plans and knew it would be uncomfortable for customers to dine in. As such, the firm suggested an alternative material, which still gave the client the shimmering look and texture they wanted while muffling the sounds of customer conversations. As a result, the key design element of the room - the shimmering dome with the chandelier - would allow for a private dining experience.

In addition to the dome, Forte also completed the redesign of the back bar wall within the blue-themed room to encompass a floating effect and include up-lighting to illuminate the bottles along the bar. Through suggesting alternative materials that still accomplished the design intent, looking at plans and identifying redundancies and unnecessary demolition and careful project management, planning and weekly communication with the owner, Forte was able to return $500,000 in contingency to the owner and complete the project three weeks before its scheduled completion date.

“A play on the idea of a restaurant as a theatre, Carbone's focus is creating a multi-sensory experience for its guests, which was a perfect fit for the Forte team,” Acton added. “From the design to the uniforms and the music, Carbone tells a story and delivers an authentic, engaging experience that embodies the 1950s of Las Vegas. Because of Forte's uniquely qualified project team, we're known for bringing multi-sensory experiences to life during the construction process, which tied directly into the multi-sensory atmosphere the restaurant sought.”

Forte's project team included Jim Howard, vice president of estimating and design; Stewart Mackin, superintendent; Angie Rowe, project manager; and Brock Davis, project engineer. The MGM Resorts International design team comprised Perry Bertuzzi, senior project manager. Bergman, Walls & Associates, LTD served as project architect and Ken Fulk provided interior design services.

Carbone joins a number of additional Las Vegas restaurants Forte has worked on throughout the Las Vegas strip, including Bardot Brasserie in Aria, Nobu in Caesar's Palace and Gordon Ramsay BurGR in Planet Hollywood.
