New Chicago Architecture Foundation Tour

Urban Reform Efforts Among Women and Minorities Explored

CHICAGO, IL, May 12, 2008. Known for their quality architecture tours, the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) has added a Roots of Reform Bus Tour, highlighting efforts among women and minorities to improve the urban condition. Tours are scheduled for select Thursdays and Sundays, June through September and depart from CAF, 224 S. Michigan Avenue.

The history of late nineteenth century Chicago typically focuses on white, middle and upper class men who built businesses that fueled the city's growth. CAFs tours regularly explore the notable structures and architects connected to those businessmen.

This tour is different -- it explores the architecture and history of the near south side from 1871 to 1920, and some of the lesser-known individuals - Blacks, Jews, and women - who also helped to build Chicago. Some did this by working for social and civic reforms that made the city a safer, more livable place for all classes; many of these reformers were active in public affairs even before they were able to vote.

This two and a half hour tour through Chicago’s near south side tells the story of "the others" who contributed to this growing city. The tour also provides a view of the built environment - homes, synagogues, churches and parks - that played a part in the lives of these men and women.

The cost is $30 for CAF members; $35 for non-members. For information and an up-to-date schedule, www.architecture.org or call 312 922 3432.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public interest and education in architecture and design. The Chicago Architecture Foundation pursues this mission through a comprehensive program of architecture tours, exhibitions, panel discussions, and youth and adult education programs. Home to a new permanent exhibition: CHICAGO YOU ARE HERE, the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s ARCHICENTER is located at 224 South Michigan Avenue at Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois 60604. For further information visit www.architecture.org or call 312.922.3432.
