36% Reduction in Water Usage with HydroClean System

Multi-Unit Study

SHOREWOOD, IL, May 12, 2008. An independent study conducted for the Region of Halton’s ongoing water efficiency initiative in Ontario, Canada, recently found that the installation of the HydroClean® toilet fill valve produced an immediate and sustainable 36% reduction in water usage by eliminating all wasted water in a 159-unit condominium complex. The study corroborates results found in a collaborative study done last year with a major hotel chain that found that low-flow, 1.6 gallon toilets were wasting between 32 and 78 ounces per flush, for an installation payback of less than eight months.

In describing the results of the Canada study, Fred Harrison, Halton Property Management says, "We chose the HydroClean over a municipal toilet rebate program because it looked easier and less expensive. And it was! We are now saving about 6,340 gallons of water per day for an estimated savings of $1,250 per month in water and sewer costs. That’s a payback of less than four months. Just phenomenal!"

The study was conducted by Bill Gauley, principle and co-founder of Veritec Consulting, Inc. Gauley is a water efficiency leader in North America whose de facto toilet performance testing standard (MaP Testing) is the basis of the EPA’s WaterSense requirements for toilet performance.

The 17-story building had a total of 325 toilets that were a mix of 3.5 gpf and 1.6 gpf toilets with a daily usage rate of 17,435 gpd. Following installation of the HydroClean system, the rate dropped to 11,095 gpd for a savings of 6,340 gpd – enough water to fill the average home swimming pool every three days.

Of the water saved, 71% was attributed to HydroClean’s unique calibration feature that properly balances the toilet’s tank and bowl water levels without sacrificing full flush efficiency. Miscalibration is the most frequent source of water loss in toilets even in high efficiency 1.6 gallon toilets.

The remaining 29% was saved because of the HydroClean’s ability to detect leaks. In addition, because the HydroClean is engineered to shut off the water flow at a slower rate, water hammer was significantly reduced. In the 2007 hotel study cited above, water hammer was 100% improved – eliminating the top customer complaint for this hotel property.

The HydroClean toilet fill valve was invented by a fourth generation plumber and holds nine issued or pending patents. For more information about the HydroWorks™ toilet improvement system, contact MJSI at 888-GOMJSI-1, x 112 or visit the hotel page on the company’s website at www.gomjsi.com/hotel.
