Red Mountain Spa Guests Choose Between a Rock and a Soft Place

Award-winning luxury spa facility uses NxTV for in-room convenience, 200-movie selection

MARCH 19, 2008. Utah's Red Mountain Spa is surrounded by the majestic buttes and rose colored sandstone cliffs of Snow Canyon State Park and it attracts health-minded outdoor enthusiasts like bees to nectar. Hundreds arrive each year to hike, bike, climb, attend bodywork classes and meditate in a pristine environment that offers clear air, infinite vistas of red rock formations and outdoor exercise programs that can be as simple, or challenging, as individuals care to make them.

Red Mountain Spa also has its gentler side, providing guests with full-service spa "adventures" that focus on renewal, enrichment and relaxation catering to guests who care more for yoga and facials than power walks and rock climbing. As General Manager Tracey Welsh explains it, "People come here for a 'wellness experience.' How they achieve it is a matter of personal choice, and Red Mountain Spa focuses on providing the unique inner or outer experience that is right for every individual."

An important part of the Red Mountain experience is its state-of-the-art Sagestone Spa & Salon, voted "Favorite Destination Spa in 2007" by Spa Magazine. The beautiful destination resort also provides guests with the healthiest of cuisine and has a custom in-room guest entertainment system from NxTV that provides hundreds of viewing options for guests that want something different. "Our NxTV IP Video on Demand (IPVOD) in-room system even offers stretch classes and other personal fitness programming," Welsh said. "This type of a personal guest entertainment experience is a perfect fit for our guests and property. People want to reconnect with nature and we bundle health, fitness, wonderful cuisine, personalized entertainment and a spa environment all in one place."

Welsh, who has been at the resort for six years and directed its recent technology upgrades, says most guests arrive with a Bluetooth in their ear and Blackberry in hand, but within a day or two their high-tech tools have been stashed away until they are recharged and ready to go out into the world again. For many executives and long-term guests however, turning off the outside world completely just is not possible, so accommodating their needs was also a top priority during Red Mountain Spa's recent tech improvements.

"We are in a remote location," Welsh said, "Providing easily accessible, reliable Internet service is reassuring to our guests. Knowing they can connect to the office or their home when necessary helps de-stress them even before they get here." Welsh points out that the property's Internet access is also supplied by NxTV, which provides the resort's digital IP-based in-room entertainment services. "Our commitment to providing choice doesn't just end with their outdoor experiences; it extends right into our guests' rooms where they can choose to log on, or relax, by selecting movies from a huge library of films. The majority of our guests are well traveled and stay for a week or more. They value having access to a large variety of original viewing alternatives."

According to Welsh, NxTV has performed well for them, especially because the company seamlessly bridged the technology gap between the property's new fiber optic cable and its legacy infrastructure which links Red Mountain Spa's historic structures and its newest spread across the grounds in five separate buildings.

"Giving guests personal experiences in a beautiful natural setting teaches that we are just one piece of a much larger world," Welsh said. "We provide the widest range of activities and experiences so that when visitors leave Red Mountain Spa, they are invigorated.
