. October 14, 2008

CHADDS FORD, PA, April 2, 2008. Thirty-one of the nation's most outstanding antique dealers will showcase a variety of American and English furniture, glass, metalware, ceramics folk art, quilts, Oriental and European porcelain, rugs, and other fine collectibles at the 37th Annual Brandywine River Museum Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Proceeds benefit their Art Purchase Fund, which has added more than 200 paintings, drawings and prints to the Museum's holdings since 1975.

New to the show this year are antiques dealers Mark & Marjorie Allen of Manchester, New Hampshire; Douglas Constant, Inc. of Orient, Long Island, New York; Jane McClafferty Antiques from New Canaan, Connecticut; Norwoods' Spirit of America of Timonium, Maryland and Michael J. Whitman Antiques from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

The exhibition Beyond Content: Decorative Wooden Boxes will go on view in conjunction with the Antiques Show. In the18th and 19th centuries, skillful cabinetmakers created boxes that combined function and beauty. These beautiful and fascinating boxes served a wide variety of purposes. They held expensive teas, protected household silver, and provided organized storage for ladies' sewing supplies, among other uses. Viewed as indispensable accessories, boxes reflect the styles of their times. Borrowed from private and public collections, the exceptional boxes in this exhibition feature a broad range of decorative elements such as paint, veneer, and carving.
