UNTWO Roadmap for Recovery - News Conference

. March 10, 2009

MARCH 11, 2009 -

WHO:

Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary-General and interim Geoffrey Lipman UNWTO Assistant Secretary-General & Spokesperson

WHAT:

o Travel means Jobs, Infrastructure, Trade and Development

o Tourism and Travel should be put at the core of Stimulus Packages and the Green New Deal.

The tourism sector has been negatively affected by the economic downturn and in all likelihood will continue to be in the short to medium term. This is not however the first time the sector has suffered a setback and, if handled correctly, it looks set to bounce back stronger than before.

The tourism industry has the potential to play a relevant post-crisis role and UNWTO highlights the relevance of keeping in mind the long term benefits of tourism - job creation, contribution to local economies and poverty reduction.

Against this background, UNWTO's Roadmap for Recovery underscores the relevance of response measures in equilibrium with long-term commitments to climate and development.
