El Cid La Ceiba Oopens Maya-influenced Spa

. October 14, 2008

MEXICO, June, 2006. El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel will open, June 10, the Cocai Spa & Wellness Center.

The full-service Cocai Spa takes its name from the ancient Maya word for "firefly."

The spa's Maya-inspired Temazcal treatment purifies with steam rising from a small, round, adobe-brick chamber that lights up like a firefly. Inside the chamber are red-hot volcanic stones.

Sitting on a bed of natural herbs, the stones produce a sauna, soothingly scented for rest and rejuvenation.

Cocai will offer massages, body scrubs, body wraps and facials that reflect the Maya culture.

For example, an 80-minute Maya mud body wrap will relieve dry skin from a day on the beach, using marine salt exfoliation and a secret recipe of Maya mud.

The session will conclude with an orange and vanilla body cream massage.

Other Cocai treatments will include warm-stone massages and foot massages focusing on reflex points to induce an overall sense of wellbeing.

Near the spa, the El Cid La Ceiba's Adults-Only Silent Area will repeat the rest and rejuvenation themes in an oceanfront day lounge with massage tents and cabins, Jacuzzi and sun deck surrounded by graceful palms.

The open-air lounge will offer seating on giant, plush mattresses, cushion and lounge chairs.

Guests will sip tropical drinks here, while enjoying spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

"El Cid La Ceiba offers something for everyone," says Pedro Maupome, the resort's general manager.

"Cozumel is a long-time favorite among scuba divers. Now, a soothing massage can be the perfect ending to a day of diving and exploring the island's world-renowned reefs."

The debut of the Cocai Spa concludes El Cid La Ceiba's $8 million (USD) renovation.

The popular beachfront hotel was fully remodeled following Hurricane Wilma last fall.

All common areas - including oceanfront restaurants and bars, pools, beaches and elevators - were rebuilt entirely. Interiors in guestrooms and suites were refurbished in the hotel's new upscale, minimalist style.

The new, 200-seat La Chopa Restaurant is casual and upscale, too, designed to resemble a pyramid. The new pool features cascading waterfalls, with bar and Jacuzzi nearby.

"The El Cid La Ceiba is back in business," says Maupome, "offering brand new amenities with the traditional service and hospitality that have become the El Cid Resorts' trademark."

El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel in Cozumel, Mexico, is one of six hotels owned and operated by El Cid Resorts.

In Mazatl'an, El Cid owns four hotels, a 27-hole golf course, a full-service marina and a destination-management company.

Additionally, the company owns and operates the Hotel Marina El Cid Riviera Maya - a 350-suite, luxury, oceanfront, all-inclusive resort, bordering the National Reef Park in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
