Historic Hotels of America 2007 Directory

. October 14, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC, January 26, 2007. The 2007 Historic Hotels of America directory is available and includes enhancements to help people select the ideal historic hotel for their travels.

"Historic Hotels of America offers travelers a sense of place and diversity in experiences," says Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. "With the 2007 directory, travelers can learn more about the hotels to ensure they select the one that best suits their needs and expectations."

Enhancements allow travelers to determine if the hotel was originally built as a hotel or if it has been converted into a hotel. Identifiers describe the type of hotel (inn, hotel or resort) as well as the style of service (charming, classic or luxurious). Icons showcase the historic charm and character unique to Historic Hotels of America members such as having historic tours, art collections, ghosts, presidential visits or gardens.

The directory highlights an interesting fact about each hotel. Here is a sampling:

o Cowboy turned artist Lon Megargee's home is now the Hermosa Inn in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Megargee is known for painting the picture, "The Last Drop" that can be seen inside any original Stetson hat.

o John Rutledge House Inn in Charleston, S.C., is one of only 15 homes of signers of the Constitution that stand to this day.

o During the Cold War, The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., was home to a secret "bunker" intended to house Congress in the event of an attack.

Historic Hotels of America is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Historic Hotels has identified 207 hotels in 39 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that have faithfully maintained their historic integrity, architecture and ambiance.
