BENCHMARK Appoints Larry Johnson Director of Finance for Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center

HOUSTON, TX. October 18, 2017 - THE WOODLANDS… BENCHMARK®, a global hospitality company, has named Larry Johnson director of finance for Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, a Benchmark Resorts & Hotels property located in Roanoke, Virginia. Hotel Roanoke is a part of Curio - A Collection by Hilton. Brian Wells, general manager, made the announcement.

“I am very happy to welcome Larry to our property,” said Mr. Wells. “He comes to us with important experience in hotel finance, gained in several leadership positions across multiple hotels. We look forward to his active participation as part of our executive team.”

Larry Johnson brings years of experience in hotel finance to his new position with Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. He was previously director of finance for the Hilton Durham in his native state of North Carolina. During his tenure there Mr. Johnson was twice honored with the Director of Finance of the Year Award by Interstate Hotels & Resorts, which manages the property. He also held a seat on the company’s Finance Council. Johnson has served as director of finance for Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh Durham Research Triangle, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Greenville Golf Resort and Conference Center, and Durham Marriott City Center.

Mr. Johnson is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has relocated to Roanoke.

Social Media: Engagement is Key

There are currently 2.3 billion active users of social media networks and savvy hotel operators have incorporated social media into their marketing mix. There are a few Goliath channels on which one must have a presence (Facebook & Twitter) but there are also several newer upstart channels (Instagram, Snapchat &WeChat, for example) that merit consideration. WeChat is a Chinese company whose aim is to be the App for Everything - instant messaging, social media, shopping and payment services - all in a single platform. In addition to these channels, blogging continues to be a popular method to establish leadership, enhance reputations, and engage with customers in a direct and personal way. The key to effective use of all social media is to find out where your customers are and then, to the fullest extent possible, engage with them on a personal level. This engagement is what creates a personal connection and sustains brand loyalty. The February Hotel Business Review will explore these issues and examine how some hotels are successfully integrating social media into their operations.
