Tapestry Collection by Hilton Welcomes The Cassara Carlsbad, a Mediterranean-Style hotel, to Its Expanding Portfolio

USA, San Diego, California. January 14, 2020

The Cassara Carlsbad, Tapestry Collection By Hilton, a 90-room fully redesigned, full-service hotel just minutes from LEGOLAND California, the famous Carlsbad Flower Fields, the Crossings Golf Course and Carlsbad Premium Outlets, is the latest addition to the Tapestry Collection by Hilton portfolio, one of Hilton's 17 market-leading brands.

The modern hotel features stunning and elegant colors the minute you walk into the lobby. The distinctive logo embodies the beautiful, colorful rows of the blossoming ranunculus flower, which is interpreted throughout the hotel with help from an iconic Mediterranean shape found in century-old Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian architecture and art forms. Intertwined in the lobby and room style are organic colors of natural sand and ocean hues that whisk you away to a beach-front, laid-back lifestyle that people dream about. The Cassara Carlsbad commemorates over 60 years of local North County flavor while still imbuing a modern Mediterranean spirit throughout the hotel.

"We are proud to welcome The Cassara Carlsbad to our collection of world-class hotels and resorts here in one of the most beautiful coastal communities in the country," said Chris Draper, Managing Director of The Cassara Carlsbad. "Whether for work or play, the Cassara offers spaces and experiences designed to inspire as well as a location nearby tech hubs and San Diego's top attractions."

Unveiling a total redesign of the lobby and check-in areas and fully updated guest rooms with Pacific Ocean coastal views, the hotel originally opened as the Grand Pacific Palisades Hotel in 1999 and recently joined the Tapestry Collection by Hilton portfolio. The family-friendly Cassara Carlsbad is immediately adjacent to LEGOLAND California, which features a private pedestrian entrance, a family pool with water features and quiet pool options, and unique and locally-sourced sustainable food and cocktails served at the Costa Pacific Kitchen & Bar.

· DINING

Meal options abound, both from the area's numerous eateries as well as on-property offerings. The hotel's The Cassara Kitchen & Bar specializes in offering fresh seasonal seafood dishes and casual American fare inspired by the Southern California lifestyle, serving entrees such as Baja Fish Tacos, made with basmati rice, Harrisa citrus marinade, bloomsdale spinach and a Steakhouse Burger, featuring a ½ pound brisket short rib patty, thick-cut bacon grilled onion, white cheddar, and house remoulade. The bar will also serve up seasonal cocktails such as the Hibiscus Sour made with Mi Campo Blanco, lemon juice, Hibiscus tea syrup, and egg whites.

· AMENITIES

Guests seeking exercise or relaxation have a variety of options, including a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center, access to nearby Ocean Pearl Spa, two sparkling pools, shuttle transportation within a 5-mile radius of the hotel to visit iconic Southern California beaches and beyond, and access to a private pedestrian entrance into LEGOLAND California.

Human Resources: Confronting a Labor Shortage

With the unemployment rate at its lowest level in decades (3.7%), what has always been a perennial problem for human resource professionals - labor shortage - is now reaching acute levels of concern. It is getting harder to find and recruit qualified applicants. Even finding candidates with the skills to succeed in entry-level positions has become an issue. In addition, employee turnover rates remain extremely high in the hotel industry. As a result of these problems, hotel HR managers are having to rethink their recruitment strategies in order to hire the right talent for the right job. First, hotels have been forced to raise their wages and offer other appealing perks, as a way to attract qualified candidates. Secondly, HR managers are reassessing their interviewing techniques, focusing less on the answers they receive to questions and more on observable behavior. Part of this process includes role-playing during the interview, so that the recruiter can gauge how a candidate works through specific problems and interacts with other team members. Additionally, some HR managers are also creating internal talent pools as a way to address labor shortages. Instead of utilizing department resources to find new hires with specific skills for needed positions, hotels are cultivating talent pools internally and preparing their employees to assume leadership roles whenever the time comes. They are also placing greater emphasis on a company culture that is more performance-based, as a way to curb employee turnover, increase employee satisfaction, and assure higher levels of customer service. Finally, recognizing the importance of employee retention as a way to lessen the impact of a tight labor market, some HR managers are instituting generous reward programs in order to retain their top performers. The March Hotel Business Review will explore what some HR professionals are doing to address these and other issues in their departments.
