Sam Moon Group: A New Twist on Hotel Design
By Daniel Moon VP / General Counsel, Sam Moon Group | February 09, 2020
Sam Moon Trading Co. was founded as a wholesaler in 1984 by my father and mother, David and In Sun Moon. After their success in retail, Sam Moon Group opened additional ancillary stores and developed Class A shopping centers. We developed four shopping centers around our Sam Moon Trading Co. stores, which specialize in women's accessories and handbags. The shopping centers are located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Frisco and Shenandoah, Texas.
I began working with Sam Moon Group in 1994. Our first development apart from retail was Coyote Ridge Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas which we bought and redeveloped in 2005. It is an award-winning 18-hole public golf course and clubhouse. The clubhouse restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner so this was really our first step into the hospitality business. The property also has a pro-shop, one of the most successful in the area, so with Coyote Ridge we were able to blend my father's love of golf, with the retail business we knew so well in the pro-shop and begin our experience with the hospitality industry through Grill 19 Restaurant and Bar and the meeting and event spaces available at Coyote Ridge.
Next, we developed our first hotel, Renaissance Dallas at Plano Legacy West, in Plano, Texas, in 2017. It's a trendy, upscale hotel with 304 rooms and is located in Legacy West shopping center. Within the hotel is 30,000 square feet of flexible conference and meeting space; three restaurant options; a fitness center; club level with lounge; and an amenity deck with a heated pool, cabanas, outdoor bar, grill and event space. Our restaurants within the hotel include OMA, a chic Asian restaurant that features classic Asian Fusion regional dishes; Whiskey Moon, a cocktail lounge with Asian fusion bites, local craft beers and Japanese and Texan whiskeys; and Texas Teahouse & Market, a shop for coffee, tea, to-go meals and more.
We just opened and are continuing to lease up Metropark Square, a 70-acre mixed use development north of Houston in Shenandoah. It features 175,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, entertainment, residential and hospitality space anchored by a 40,000 square-foot Dave & Buster's and a 41,500 square-foot, 10-screen AMC Theatre with the latest in Dolby Cinema and IMAX. It is the newest AMC movie theatre that has opened in the Houston area in over 20 years.
The development is wrapped around a central green space area that includes a pavilion, fountain and outdoor event space for all ages to enjoy. We sponsor monthly entertainment on the event lawn to create a place for families to come and enjoy entertainment while they are shopping, dining or visiting other tenants.
