Pan Pacific Hotel Seattle Introduces PanEarth Initiative

The Pacific Northwest region has always been at the forefront of the green revolution, and at Pan Pacific Hotel Seattle, we felt it made good business sense to offer sustainable services and options that were in line with our customers' wants and needs. Since opening in 2006, the team at Pan Pacific Hotel Seattle has put a significant focus on being globally responsible and on collaborating with our local community. In 2010, we made a mindful decision to implement a property-wide sustainability program called PanEarth.
The PanEarth program incorporates all aspects of community and environment into corporate decision-making and honors of the triple bottom line: people, planet, profit. The triple bottom line is a set of values and criteria for measuring organizational and societal success based on economic, ecological and social impact.
While other hotels often adopt environmentally friendly practices as cost saving initiatives, Pan Pacific implemented the PanEarth program because we truly value sustainable practices and believe that our customers know the difference. After an initial cost benefit analysis, our leadership team concluded that it made business sense to invest in a wide variety of initiatives and we have already seen direct returns from our initial investments. For example, after purchasing the Natura water system and eliminating all plastic bottles on our property, our waste stream has greatly reduced and we have decreased our water purchasing expenses by 60% since last year.
All of our guests experience these eco friendly practices from just walking through our doors, but the opportunity to participate in the PanEarth program is also available for those stopping by the property for meetings and events. Our newest developments are our carbon neutral hotel stays and meetings.
By working with Seattle-based OneEnergy Renewables, Pan Pacific has developed simple and innovative ways to support clean energy and help guests manage their carbon environmental footprint while traveling. For as little as fifty cents per night, guests have the option to offset the impact of their hotel stay. That small contribution supports about 25 kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean wind energy going onto the U.S. electricity grid. If guests opt to give $1, thereby doubling their impact, Pan Pacific matches their contribution. The wind energy for this program is supported in the form of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), which are sourced from facilities in both Washington State and North Dakota. Our offsets are verified through Climate Action Reserve.
Through the varied components of PanEarth programming, guests have the opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the local community and neutralize the carbon footprint of their individual hotel stays as well as their meetings and events.
