Building Alignment: The Secret Sauce to Success

Nelson Mandela said it best…"it always seems impossible until it's done."
Mr. Mandela was a man who understood that only through aligning people to a higher purpose could the greatest accomplishment of his generation be achieved for South Africa. He was the kind of leader who understood that within each of us is a common need. As he said: "for to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." This was a truly inspiring, compelling and engaging vision for his people.
There is no doubt that Mandela's leadership was extraordinary as he set out to bring millions of people together to move toward what many thought would never come to be for South Africa. The common thread that allowed him to align people was the need to feel respected while freedom was the mission.
Our job as organizational leaders is really no different. We must provide a compelling and inspiring higher purpose in order to get our people aligned. We must show them how their participation matters to the mission at large. We must help them see that together we are stronger. When we rise to our individual potential, we strengthen the potential of achieving greatness for ourselves and for the people we work beside and hence, the organization at large.
Over the last 20 years, I have been blessed to work with hundreds of leaders both outstanding and to be honest, horrifying. What makes the difference has always been at the heart of my curiosity and ironically, is also at the heart of a leader's success. The ability to build alignment is the secret sauce.
To harness the power of your people, you first have to awaken each individual's positive energy and enthusiasm. You must define and communicate your culture and develop a strategy to deliver on your culture's vision. And yet: this work will do nothing unless you have the power to align your community with your culture. Alignment is what allows an organization to move as one body toward the same compelling future. Intentional leadership is the art of building alignment.
