Bermuda Tourism Announces Daily Flights from the UK to Bermuda

And Plans to Increase UK Visitor Figures in 2006 at WTM

. October 14, 2008

The Bermuda Department of Tourism (BDOT) has announced that British Airways' London-Bermuda service is to go daily next year. The airline will operate an additional two non stop flights (Wednesday and Friday) to and from the island every week from London Gatwick between May 5 and October 27, 2006.

The UK is already the biggest source of European travellers to the island, accounting for 21,431 visitors in 2004, and the BDOT is aiming to significantly increase UK visitor figures in 2006.

Glenn Bean, Director of Sales and Marketing, comments, "The daily service is a significant milestone in our efforts to grow our UK business, providing the capacity that we need to increase our leisure business out of the market."

"We are confident that there is plenty of opportunity for growth and the new daily service offers the ideal spring board for launching our campaign to increase visitor figures from the UK in 2006. We will be meeting with our trade partners at WTM to discuss ways of working together to achieve this."

Bermuda has underlined its commitment to the UK and European market with the opening of its new dedicated Tourism Office in London staffed by Thomas MacDonald, Regional Sales Manager, UK and Europe, Neitra Dill, Sales Assistant UK/Europe and Christopher Joell-Deshields Business Development Manager UK/Europe. The office will be under the direction of Bermuda's newly formed Sales and Marketing office in New York.

Bermuda is also keen to promote its newest resort, nine beaches, which opened this year. Nine Beaches is an ultra-casual resort where guests stay in cabanas at the water's edge or on stilts over the water with a window in the floor to view Bermuda's tropical fish.

The resort is on a private 18-acre peninsula and facilities include two pools, waterside restaurants and bars, extensive water sports, and outdoor activities, and of course, nine beaches.

Bermuda's hoteliers will have a strong presence on stand with representatives from the island's luxury cottage colonies, resort hotels and destination management companies attending the show.

The Bermuda team will also be highlighting the island's annual Bermuda Festival which takes place in January and February and features classical, choir and jazz concerts as well as ballet, theatre and circus acrobats.

Glenn Bean adds: "Bermuda is easily accessible from the UK being just a seven hour flight away and so appeals to travellers seeking a short break as well as a longer stay. Key attractions for the UK market are its stunning pink sand beaches, its history, the wide variety of water sports on offer and of course the excellent golf courses, shopping and restaurants. Also the weather which rarely drops below 18C." For more information on Bermuda consult the web site at www.bermudatourism.co.uk.
