Waterford Seeks Employee Election On Union
HARTFORD, CT, April 19, 2006. A Hartford hotel operator asked the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election to determine if a union will represent 240 workers at Waterford's Marriott hotel here.
The Waterford Group, which operates the Marriott Hotel at Adriaen's Landing, said an election should end- one way or another- a union organizing drive.
Employers requested fewer than 1.5% of union representation elections in 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available, according to the NLRB. In most cases, unions seek elections to determine whether they will represent workers.
Antony Dugdale, a senior research analyst at Unite HERE!, the union trying to organize the hotel workers, said his group will oppose the company's request to the NLRB.
Dugdale said the union wants the company to sign a "labor peace agreement" that details ground rules for how workers would vote. Such an agreement is standard in the industry and is required by a Hartford ordinance.
According to Waterford executives, the National Labor Relations Act, which spells out how union elections are conducted, should apply.
John Cotter, assistant regional director for the NLRB in Hartford, said federal law permits employers to seek elections. The agency will schedule a hearing to gather information before deciding whether to schedule an election.
