200 Workers Protest at Toronto Hotel

. October 14, 2008

TORONTO, Canada, July 13, 2006. About 200 union activists demonstrated outside Toronto's Le Royal Meridien King Edward hotel in support of a room attendant, according to the Canadian Press.

Filomena Canedo says she was fired after she was hurt on the job. The 56-year-old room attendant had worked at the King Eddie for 13 years.

The luxury hotel rejected her allegations. They did say she wasn't fired but refused to discuss her case further.

Union leaders say fierce competition among hotels is increasing demands on room attendants. As a result, they say on-the-job injuries are common because of the heavy workload.
