Isles of Scilly, a Unique Piece of England
Looking for the perfect end of summer or Fall getaway to the UK?
JULY 22, 2009 - If you are, then you might want to think about The Isles of Scilly - an Island Archipelago, warmed by the Gulf Stream and lying 28 miles off the Western tip of mainland UK.
With 5 inhabited and over 100 uninhabited Islands, offering some of the best beaches in Europe combined with wonderfully clear, azure waters, the Islands are a destination that are just starting to appear on the US vacation radar - with more US hits to its site than it has seen before.
Only reached by Helicopter, small fixed wing plane or daily foot passenger ferry, the warmer climate makes the end of the summer and September through October a perfect time to visit the Islands, which offer everything from luxury hotels and traditional B&Bs through to wonderful self-catering cottages.
Each of the Islands - St Mary's (the largest), Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes and Bryher - which are linked by boat services, retain a charm and character all of their own and make for wonderful exploration.
Described as Northern Europe's answer to the Caribbean, with four of the five Islands traffic free - apart from the odd tractor and the occasional golf buggy - life is a lot quieter and slower on the Isles of Scilly which simply adds to the feeling of peace and relaxation.
Activities on the Scillies centre around its unique landscape and environment with over 60 miles of coastal walks, island hopping by boat to both the inhabited and uninhabited Islands, horse riding, bike hire, fishing, bird and wildlife watching, or discovering some of the wonderful workshops, studio's and galleries offering local arts and crafts.
The Islands - population just over 2,000 - are also home to the internationally renowned Tresco Abbey Garden - home to 20,000 exotic plants, the majority of which would not survive on mainland Britain.
Alternatively you can simply relax on one of the scores of beaches across the Islands and enjoy the many and varied restaurants, pubs and caf'e's serving fabulous seafood and dishes made from fresh ingredients - many of which have been grown on the Islands.
"September and October is a beautiful time on the Isles of Scilly. There are not many places in the UK, where you could be walking across a deserted white sand beach lapped by crystal clear waters on a warm September or October afternoon, but that's exactly what can happen here," said Jess Smalley of Island Marketing.
"Life runs at a more relaxed pace on the Islands with walking, island hopping, fishing, bird and wildlife spotting or simply exploring the wonderful natural environment and stunning views that the Islands have to offer. It's a place that is focused on relaxation," added Jess.
