Michigan State School of Hospitality Business Names Alumnus of the Month
DECEMBER 27, 2006. The School of Hospitality Business Alumni Association of Michigan State University has named Mark van Hartesvelt, partner of Gemstone Resorts International LLC, alumnus of the month. The award was presented in recognition of van Hartesvelt's significant contributions to The School and to leadership in the hospitality profession.
A 1973 graduate of Michigan State, he holds a B.A. in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, and completed work toward an MBA from the University of Chicago. van Hartesvelt has built a career as one of the hotel industry's leading hospitality concept and marketing executives. His 30-plus-year career includes senior management positions with Holiday Inns, Harrah's, Resorts International, Pratt Hotel Corporation, Guest Quarters and Doubletree. He co-founded Gemstone Resorts in 1994, which today is ranked among the 20 largest hotel management companies. Its managed hotels achieved the industry's fourth highest revenue per available room, according to a recent independent survey.
van Hartesvelt is a frequent speaker and author of articles on boutique hotels, management, marketing and food and beverage. He is the author of Hospitality Administration, a classic college text book on hotels operations and strategy.
He is a former member of the board of directors of Encore Productions and a past director of Colorado Gaming and Entertainment Inc., and various tourism and planning boards.
