. October 14, 2008

ELDRED, PA, January 31, 2007. Take a walk through history. The Eldred World War II Museum announces a special exhibit of original artwork from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner artist Bill Mauldin, entitled Bill Mauldin: Original Works 1960-1991. The exhibit will be available for viewing from February 10, 2007 to April 7, 2007 at the Eldred World War II Museum, 201 Main Street, Eldred, PA.

Bill Mauldin's cartoons became well-known during World War II through the Stars and Stripes military newspaper. The characters he created, Willie and Joe, reflected the American GI in a way that captured the war experience in a human and often humorous way. Maudlin received the Pulitzer Prize for his WWII artwork in 1945. Following the War, Mauldin was an actor, writer and illustrator. He ran for Congress in 1956, but would return to cartooning in 1958 on the editorial pages of the St. Louis Dispatch. He received his second Pulitzer Prize a year later.

The Museum exhibit consists of 26 original editorial cartoons drawn from 1960-1991 and four limited edition Willie and Joe prints. The exhibit comes from the Estate of Bill Mauldin and has previously only been on display in Chicago at the Jean Albano Gallery. "We are excited and honored to display this exhibit", explains Museum Curator Nicholas Pascuzzi, "especially due to the fact that this original artwork has only been on display one other time".

The Eldred World War II Museum opened on Memorial Day 1996. The Museum hosts numerous exhibits including: battle maps, a complete timeline of WWII events, vintage posters, a wall of valor, interactive displays, a command post, women behind the lines and dioramas. Artifacts are included from both the Axis and Allied fronts including an actual Sheridan tank, a submarine periscope, uniforms, fire arms, munitions, medals, and a complete Army Dodge power wagon from 1942.

One of the largest WWII libraries in the country is also housed within the museum. Eldred, Pennsylvania is the site of the former Eldred National Munitions Company which operated from January 1942 through May 1945. Employing 1500 workers, 95 percent of which were women, the plant was in production 24 hours a day. Products included trench mortar shells, incendiary hand grenades, thermite aerial bombs and bomb fuses.

Dedicated to preserving the history of World War II, and to educating the public on the lessons of the past, the museum hosts school groups and motor coach tours year round. Upcoming programs for 2007 include a Memorial Day celebration, summer tours, and decorated military veteran speakers.

Eldred is located 80 miles south of Buffalo, 110 miles east of Erie, and 175 miles north of Pittsburgh. There is no admission fee. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. For additional information, contact Director Jay Tennies or Curator Nicholas Pascuzzi at (814)225-2220 or [email protected].
