The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd. extends a hand to tsunami victims in Phuket, Thailand
NEW YORK, NY, November 18, 2005. Mr. Paul M. McManus, president and chief executive officer of The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd., recently paid a visit to the Baan Nork Na School in Phuket, Thailand, which was the recipient of the proceeds from a relief effort the company had undertaken earlier this year.
In the wake of last December's devastating tsunami, the employees of The Leading Hotels of the World sought ways to send meaningful aid to the ravaged area, and organized a number of fundraising activities to benefit victims in the affected regions. The school was chosen for the project at the recommendation of Mr. Jan Verduyn, general manager of the Dusit Laguna Resort in Phuket. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the hotel is a long-time supporter of the school.
"The entire world was stunned by the magnitude of this natural disaster," said Mr. McManus. "Those of us who are fortunate enough to work in a global industry were especially distressed by the news, as we have colleagues in the regions most affected. Our employees, in addition to making individual contributions of aid, felt it was incumbent upon our organization to mount a group effort to demonstrate our combined support for the children of Baan Nork Na."
The company raised significant funds to help restore the school's canteen. With additional means from the Lions Club of Singapore Phoenix, coordinated by Leading Hotels regional director Ms. Magdelene Low, the project has been completed.
