Myanmar Participates in ITB
BERLING, Germany, March 2, 2006. Myanmar is taking part in ITB Berlin with 50 representatives from domestic airlines, hotels and tour operators. It is part of its drive to attract tourists.
Hoteliers hope their participation will boost the countries profile and increase tourist arrivals through the introduction of new destinations.
According to the statistics from Myanmar's Ministry of Tourism, more than 660,000 overseas tourists traveled to the country by air in 2005, slightly up from about 657,000 in 2004 despite the global impact of bird flu. Throughout the year, the tourist economy rose to $153 million, up $17 million from the previous year.
Myanmar has 596 hotels, motels and guest houses providing a total of over 18,500 rooms. While the number of travel agencies in operation is over 500.
Official figures reveal foreign investment in the tourism sector has so far amounted to one billion dollars, $580 million of this total is in hotel investment.
