PromPeru Launches Campaign to Promote Iquitos and Northern Amazon Region
IQUITOS, Peru, March 14, 2006. Officials from the Commission for the Promotion of Peru (PromPeru) recently held a meeting in Iquitos to unveil the new 2006 tourism campaign to promote the country's Northern Amazon attractions. The campaign was presented to representatives from the private and public sectors of the Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Mart'in and Loreto provinces.
The Amazon comprises 50% of Peru's territory and offers visitors the ultimate nature, adventure and cultural experience. The best way to enter the Amazon is by visiting the city of Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest and the capital of the Loreto region. Iquitos is surrounded by three rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya, and the Amazon, home to the manatee or sea cow, the pink dolphin, the charapa turtle, and the anaconda. Trips can be made from Iquitos to a number of typical jungle inns, with visits to native communities such as the Bora and the Yagua.
"The objective of this initiative is to showcase the diversity of our tourism offering in this region,"said Elizabeth Barthelmess, General Manager of PromPeru. "The campaign will feature print and online ads showcasing images and attractions from Peru's Northern Amazon region, highlighting the circuit's archeological, natural and cultural features," added Barthelmess.
Promotion of Iquitos and the Northern Amazon region is part of Peru's international campaign to build awareness of the country's varied attractions. Peru will invest approximately US $7.5 million worldwide for its 2006 advertising campaign, an increase of 21% over 2005. Part of the investment will help to promote the Northern Amazon region to key markets in North and South America, Europe and Asia. The campaign will include several trade shows, seminars and workshops, including participation at the Northern Amazon Region Workshop to be held in Lima. Finally, PromPeru will coordinate familiarization trips for tour operators and press trips for journalists to the region to experience it firsthand. Trips will include visits to Lambayeque, Piura y Tumbes, Amazonas and Cajamarca to discover nature, gastronomy, the Raymillacta de los Chachapoyas festival and rural tourism respectively.
