Beijing to Build 110 Hotels for Olympics
BEIJING, China, May 24, 2006. Beijing plans will build 110 star hotels in order to cope with the demand for quality accommodation during the 2008 Olympic Games.
"The planned 110 hotels will range from one star to five stars, with a majority of them targeting high-end guests," director of Beijing Tourism Bureau, Du Jiang said at a seminar on economy hotels. Some 35 hotel investors, financial institutes, world-leading lodging operators and real estate giants attended the workshop.
It is estimated that about 4.6 million overseas visitors and 96 million domestic tourists will come to Beijing in 2008, both to see the Games and tour the city. Around the Games period, 1.44 million visitors, including 250,000 foreigners are expected to arrive.
At least 800 star-rated hotels providing around 130,000 rooms will be needed to accommodate the influx. However, Beijing currently has only 658 star-rated hotels, with a total of 109,000 rooms and 200,000 beds.

According to Du, while most guests will be accommodated in Beijing hotels, the hotels in neighbouring Hebei Province will be on stand-by.
By 2007, the number of star hotels in Beijing is expected to reach 800, providing approximately 130,000 rooms, Beijing's Vice Mayor Zhang Mao said at the seminar.
