. October 14, 2008

VICTORIA, BC, Canada, June 13, 2006. The past month has seen Dockside Green Limited, its architects, the City of Victoria and VicWest Community Association receive recognition for this groundbreaking development.

In May, Dockside Green Limited, the City of Victoria and VicWest Community Association were awarded a "Smarty" and top honours for their proposal and process during Dockside Green's planning stages, at Smart Growth BC's inaugural awards ceremony, held in Vancouver.

This past week the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada announced the winners of its 2006 National Urban Design Awards. Dockside Green's architects, Busby, Perkins + Will were awarded with a certificate of merit in the category of Approved or Adopted Urban Design Plans.

The development concept for Dockside Green was created by the City of Victoria, using an extensive participatory planning process with the community, which articulated twelve guiding principles founded on a balanced triple bottom line of social, economic and environmental performance. Smart Growth BC recognized the fact that the VicWest Community Association was very involved in the planning process and "this collaborative approach among the developer, City and local community built trust, expedited the approvals process and allowed the neighbourhood to embrace a large development at its core with excitement and anticipation".

The "Smarty" was presented during Smart Growth BC's Innovations in Smart Growth Housing conference, held in Vancouver in May. Smart Growth BC is a provincial non-governmental organization devoted to fiscally, socially and environmentally responsible land use and development. Working with community groups, businesses, municipalities and the public, it advocates for the creation of more livable communities in British Columbia.

The National Urban Design Awards are part of a two-tier program held in co-operation with major metropolitan centres in Canada. They will be presented by the presidents of the RAIC, Canadian Institute of Planners, and Canadian Society of Landscape Architects at 5:00 pm Saturday,June 17, 2006, during the culmination of the joint RAIC-Architectural Institute of BC Conference and Festival of Architecture in Vancouver. It also marks the beginning of the World Urban Forum (WUF), an international conference sponsored by UN-HABITAT.
