Melbourne Reopens Australia's Largest Convention Centre

JUNE 12, 2009 - The Melbourne Exhibition and Conference Centre is reopening its doors this after a major extension that makes it the largest of its kind in Australia. The MCEC also see the opening of a new 396-room hotel, the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf.

The new extension to the original MCEC complex offers 32 additional meeting rooms, a grand ballroom and a hall that can be divided into three separate theatres. It is also fully integrated with the existing exhibition centre. Some 50 major international conventions are already booked at the facility.

The centre boasts strong green credentials, with a six-star environmental rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Green design features include a black water treatment plant and the use of sustainable timber in the plenary hall, banquet room and foyer.

The new Hilton Melbourne South Wharf includes 396 rooms, plus a business centre and meeting facilities as well as a fitness centre, caf'e, bar and restaurant.

The MCEC is located in South Wharf in central Melbourne, on the Yarra River.
