Two Marriott Southpark Hotels are Hoping for a Big Loss in 2010......
Employees and Management Team up for Weight Loss Competition to Create a Positive, Healthier, More Productive Work Environment
CHARLOTTE, NC - March 16, 2010 - The management and staff of the Charlotte Marriott SouthPark and Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark Hotel are hoping for a big loss in 2010 - not in terms of sales, but weight!
Kris Horacek, General Manager of both properties, has always been a big proponent of exercise and eating right as she believes it creates a positive, healthier, more productive work environment. So in January, she introduced the weight loss competition to the associates at both SouthPark hotels.
Working with Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist Thomas Cardo, MC, RCEP, the hotels' 54 weight loss competition participants (there are a total of 162 associates at both hotels) have embarked on a 12-week program which involves counseling on nutrition, exercise, and how to incorporate wellness concepts into their daily lives.
Employees were split up into teams to promote a little friendly competition and to facilitate a support group so no one missed the opportunity to work out with a friend. The program was also organized to encourage teams to engage in physical activity outside the hotel with the guidance of team leaders when not working out with their fellow employees during the on-site bi-weekly workouts.
Michelle Traveis, a Marriott associate participating in the program has already seen progress in the short time she has been involved. "Over the last four weeks, I've seen an improvement in the way my clothes fit, my energy level during the day, and my sleep at night. I'm quite appreciative to have a General Manager who places such a high value on health and wellness. I doubt that I would be seeing these results without the support of my team and the momentum of the bi-weekly group workouts."
And yet the results are not just happening to each individual participant. According to Ralph Allsopp, an associate at the Renaissance SouthPark Hotel, "This program motivates us and teaches teamwork. It has strengthened relationships among all associates and this has translated into workplace changes and broken down barriers. This past weekend, we were extremely busy and associates came over from the Charlotte Marriott SouthPark and also different departments here at the Renaissance to get the job done and take care of the guests."
While one team will be proclaimed the winner and receive an award at the end of the 12-week program, all who participate will really be rewarded with a better sense of health, wellness, longevity, and camaraderie.
