Magic Springs & Crystal Falls to Eliminate Trans-fats

. October 14, 2008

HOT SPRINGS NAT'L PARK, AR, March 1, 2007. Magic Springs & Crystal Falls theme park is eliminating trans-fats in foods that it prepares for guests at the park. Unlike other fats, trans-fats are neither required nor beneficial for health and increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Many cities and states are proposing legislation to ban trans-fat, which Magic Springs is eliminating voluntarily.

"Eliminating trans-fat is part of an ongoing process in the Food Service Department to provide healthy alternatives to our guests," said Scott Poling, food service manager at the popular Hot Springs attraction, which attracted 500,000 visitors in 2006.

Poling said that for the 2007 season, which begins April 7, Magic Springs will prepare and serve french fries, chicken tenders, fried chicken, onion rings, jalapeno bottle caps and corn dogs that are free of trans-fats and prepared in oil that is free of trans-fats. This will benefit a significant number of park guests as Magic Springs will serve over 50,000 pounds of french fries and 15,000 pounds of chicken tenders in the 2007 season.

"The only food items that may contain trans-fat are prepackaged items that are individually labeled," Poling said, "and we are currently working with our suppliers to enable us to become completely trans-fat-free by the end of the 2007 season in October."

He said, "We offer a series of deli sandwiches in our Petit Jean dining location as well as salads and healthy snacks such as Sun Chips, fruit smoothies, and others at locations around the park."

Magic Springs opens for the 2007 season on April 7 and will be open weekends until May 26, when seven-day-a-week operations begin. Weekend operations resume from August 25 (except for a three-day weekend for Labor Day) to September 30. From October 6 through 26 the park will be open Friday through Sunday.

In addition to its rides and water park, Magic Springs also hosts 16 Saturday evening music concerts at its Timberwood Amphitheater, beginning June 2. The concerts are included free with admission to the park.
