It's a Pirate's Life for Me! Geo-Caching on Cape Cod

. October 14, 2008

CAPE COD BAY, MA, March 20, 2007. Taking a hint from pirate's of yore, the Bed and Breakfasts of Historic Cape Cod Bay are burying a little cache of their own this spring. Spawned by the surging interest in letter boxing or geo-caching, the 17 inns are hosting the first of hopefully many geo-caching weekends for enthusiasts and wannabes alike.

Geo-caching is an entertaining adventure sport for owners of handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) units. Started in 2000, the sport has captured the imagination of people all across the globe. The basic idea is to have individuals or organizations hide "caches" and share the locations of these caches on the internet. Geo-cachers use the location coordinates to find the caches. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure", usually toys or trinkets of little monetary value. Once found, the finder records the date and time of the find in the logbook and then rehides it for others to find.

Timed to coincide with Cape Cod Maritime Days, this geo-caching event, sponsored by the Bed and Breakfasts of Historic Cape Cod Bay, will take place on Saturday, May 5. A one-hour "introduction to geo-caching" workshop will kick off the affair in the historic Round Barn. This will be followed by a guided hunt featuring caches hidden on the grounds of the Heritage Museums & Gardens. Captializing on the new exhibit, "A Short Life and Merry: Pirates of New England", the clues to the hidden caches will feature pirate history, both fact and fiction, on display throughout the Museum.

Each of the inns has designed a special Geo-caching Weekend Adventure package that pair the Saturday afternoon adventure with deluxe accommodations, breakfast each morning, and other delights. Learn more about the Geo-caching Weekend Adventure Packages by visiting the Association's web site at www.historiccapecodbay.com, where you can read profiles of each inn, view inn photos, learn about other specials and packages offered by the inns, and find contact information to make reservations. Rates for the packages vary by inn and space is limited.

The Bed and Breakfasts of Historic Cape Cod Bay Association was founded in April of 2006 for the sole purpose of marketing and promoting the historic district along the Old Kings Highway (Route 6A), from Sandwich to Brewster.
