Delaware Art Museum Announces January/February Calendar

WILMINGTON, DE, January 15, 2008. The Delaware Art Museum presents the following exhibitions, programs, and events in January and February 2008.

EXHIBITIONS:

Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray (February 2-March 30). Born in Hungary, Nickolas Muray became a successful New York fashion and commercial photographer known for his portraits of celebrities. Having experimented with color in his work from early on, he found his most colorful model in Frida Kahlo, whom he met in Mexico in 1931. Muray's photographs of Kahlo celebrate her deep interest in her Mexican heritage, her life, and the people significant to her. This exhibition is comprised of approximately 50 photographic portraits of Frida Kahlo dating from 1937 to 1941.

West Meets East: Encounter with Chinese Art (January 12-February 24). Organized by guest curator Taini Hsu, West Meets East features over 30 works by artists from the region between New York City and Delaware, combining time-honored Chinese practices and subject matter with modern Western techniques and ideas. To highlight ancient Chinese artistic customs, the exhibition will also include historical masterworks from private collections of local Chinese families. West Meets East: Encounter with Chinese Art is the first installation from the Delaware Art Museum"s new Outlooks Exhibition Series.

In Company with Angels: Seven Tiffany Windows (extended through February 24). These stunning stained-glass windows, showing the seven angels named in the Bible's book of Revelation have not been seen together publicly in over 40 years. Created by Tiffany Studios in New York City in 1902, the remarkable eight-foot tall windows were stored in various garages and sheds for decades until their re-discovery in 2001.

PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

Tiffany Angels Tour and Stained-Glass Demonstration (Saturday, January 26, noon-2 p.m.): Dr. Mary F. Holahan, curator at the Delaware Art Museum, discusses the historical and artistic significance of the pieces comprising In Company with Angels: Seven Tiffany Windows. Following her tour, participants will enjoy a stained-glass demonstration.

How Art Gets Its Value; A panel discussion at the Delaware Theatre Company (Saturday, February 2, 4 p.m.): Danielle Rice, Executive Director of the Delaware Art Museum, moderates this panel discussion, presented by the Delaware Theater Company. The main topic is how the modern art market works, including the questions of who and what sets values. Additional panelists include Angela Hudson (Sotheby's) and Douglas Martenson (Philadelphia-area artist).

The Many Facets of the Arts and Crafts Movement (Saturday, February 23, 2 p.m.): Leslie Greene Bowman, Director of Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, chairs this panel focusing on the Arts and Crafts, 'Then and Now.' Panelists include John Levities of John Alexander Ltd., Philadelphia; Bruce Barnes, Ph.D., Founder and President, American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation; Wendy Kaplan, Department Head and Curator, Decorative Arts and Design, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Deborah Cohen, Associate Professor of History, Brown University, and recent author of Household Gods: The British and Their Possessions (Yale University Press).

Glory of Stories (Fridays January 18 and 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 10:30-11:30). For ages 3-6. A story-reading leads to a viewing of relevant works of art, followed by an art project.

Chinese New Year Family Day (Sunday, January 27 noon-3:30 p.m.) Come celebrate Chinese New Year at the Delaware Art Museum! Kids and their families can learn about traditional Chinese New Year activities through hands-on art projects, special performances, and a variety of art demonstrations. In addition to the festivities, there will be ongoing tours of the exhibition West Meets East: Encounter with Chinese Art. This program is presented in conjunction with the Han Lin Chinese Culture Association.

Discovery Days: Frida Kahlo & Nickolas Muray (Saturday, February 16 10:30 a.m.- noon). Ages 6-10. Discover the life and work of Frida Kahlo, as seen in the photography of Nickolas Muray. This fun learning experience takes kids and their parents on a tour through the exhibition Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray. Following the tour, kids continue the fun with an art project that relates to the work of Frida Kahlo. Space is limited/registration required. Parents must remain for entire program.
