Holiday Shopping in Brandywine Valley

. October 14, 2008

WILMINGTON, DE, November 7, 2007. This year, satisfy all your holiday shopping needs at Brandywine Valley museums and attractions. From creative crafts to antiques and reproductions, you'll find the practical, the whimsical, the wearable, and everything in between in this beautiful area just thirty miles southwest of Philadelphia. Museum shops and special shopping events make it easy to experience the beauty of fall while you check items off your list!

The Brandywine River Museum shop showcases wares made by and about local artisans, including jewelry by the Courtney Design Studio, Wyeth-inspired jewelry by Donald Pywell, and a large selection of art books. Starting November 23, the museum's "Critter Sale" offers unique ornaments crafted from natural materials. Skilled volunteers turn teasels, pine cones, seeds, berries, and plant fluff into reindeer, owls, raccoons, and so on into animal ornaments you won't find anywhere else. Magical! The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts is a unique source for exquisitely crafted contemporary functional art pieces made by regional and national artisans. There are many opportunities at the museum shop for the collector of functional art or the shopper seeking a unique gift. John Van Heest, 302-656-6466, x. 7110, [email protected].

The Delaware Art Museum store offers "Birds, Face Pots, and Pans" from Bur Oak Pottery. Inspiration for the works created by husband-and-wife team Ed and Laura Klein comes from R. W. Martin and Brothers Pottery, natural pieces influenced by the Renaissance and oriental motifs. Around the 1870s, Wallace Martin began creating jars in the form of fowl, often referred to humorously as "Wally Birds." Several items from the Martin Brothers Pottery are displayed at the museum in conjunction with its Pre-Raphaelite collection.

Winterthur Museum and Country Estate brings premier dealers to the first state at the "Delaware Antiques Show" (November 9-11). Style, elegance, and exceptional pieces will be the focus at the show, which takes place at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. More than 60 distinguished dealers in American antiques bring their best specimens of furniture, paintings, rugs, porcelain, silver, arts and crafts objects, jewelry, and other decorative arts. Renowned interior designer Bunny Williams gives the keynote lecture. Hillary Holland, 302-888-4734; [email protected].
