Tessa Jowell to Address Tourism Summit

. October 14, 2008

JULY 16, 2007. In one of her first engagements as Minister for the Olympics and London, Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, will today address a summit organised by Visit London on the challenges and opportunities presented by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the challenges of climate change.

Bringing together over 200 of London's key tourism industry leaders the summit will hear from Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and Eurostar Chief Executive Richard Brown CBE.

Visit London Chief Executive James Bidwell said: "The London Games are a tremendous opportunity. Understanding and leveraging the build up to and the legacy of the Games is critical to the continued success of the tourism industry in the capital.

"However, as we continue to focus on London 2012 we cannot lose sight of the most important issue affecting our world and our businesses: climate change. London's pre-eminence as the economic powerhouse of the UK and a leading world city in which to visit, invest or study means we need to lead on initiatives to tackle climate change. Action is required across all industries and future economic growth must be secured on a sustainable basis."

Minister for the Olympics and London Tessa Jowell said: "London 2012, its legacy and challenge of climate change are the greatest issues facing the tourism industry in the capital. The once-in-a-generation opportunity provided by the Games and the challenge of our environmental responsibilities mean we must take a long-term view. I am impressed at Visit London's moves to set the direction on the future of tourism and how we all want London to be in 2016 and beyond."
