Heathman Kirkland Attains ‘Built Green’ Status

. October 14, 2008

JUNE 26, 2007. The Heathman Hotel, Restaurant and Spa-Kirkland (the Heathman Hotel), an independent, luxury hotel located blocks from the city's vibrant downtown waterfront, has attained "Built Green" status, the first multifamily unit in Kirkland to do so. In addition, plans to institute a variety of energy-saving measures will qualify the property for ENERGY STAR(R) certification by its grand opening this summer.

Environmental Philosophy Permeates Property

Just as careful consideration was given to architectural design and building materials to ensure that the Heathman Hotel visually blends with Kirkland's elegant and historic buildings, intricate planning was required to minimize the property's environmental impact on the community. In a quest to become a sustainable property, various energy savings measures have been developed. For instance, all of the hotel's expended energy is being recovered and recycled in a heat-recovery loop. In addition, all guest rooms are included in a managed network of occupancy sensors: computer controlled thermostats and energy conservation units automatically adjust to save energy in unoccupied units.

Along with energy savings measures, the Heathman Hotel will be using all-natural cleaning products from BioKleen. Based in Vancouver, Wash., BioKleen provides high quality products that are both non-toxic and biodegradable. Guests also will have an opportunity to participate in the property's environmental efforts. Conservation options-including a full recycling program-will be available in all guest rooms.

Environmentally-friendly practices at the Heathman Hotel are not limited to the hotel, but are prevalent throughout the property. At Trellis, the hotel's restaurant and bar evoking great wine country restaurants, Chef Brian Sheehser will feature fresh produce that he tends on a three-acre plot of a transitional, salmon safe approved farm in Woodinville. Other products will be sourced from the region's artisan and organic suppliers. Organic products will also be featured at Penterra Spa, a haven for personalized attention and customized treatments.

Heathman Brand Embraces Green

The Heathman Hotel Kirkland's green initiatives are consistent with those of its sister property, the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Ore. The Heathman Hotel in Portland recently announced the completion of energy efficiency upgrades, made possible through an alliance with Energy Trust of Oregon and its partners Viking Energy Services and Environmental Controls. The upgrades work to reduce the historic property's energy costs and carbon footprint and move the property towards becoming an ENERGY STAR(R) Certified and Green Hotel. The Heathman Hotel is one of the first hotels in Portland to complete energy efficiency upgrades and receive financial incentives from Energy Trust for completed initiatives.
