Hotel Association Hails Passage of Post Labor Day School Bill
DETROIT, Michigan, September 21, 2005. The Michigan Hotel, Motel & Resort Association commended members of the Michigan Senate for today's passage of HB 4803 by a margin of 21-17. The legislation, introduced by Representative Ed Gaffney (R-Grosse Pointe Farms), requires all state schools to open after Labor Day.
"This is a great day for the 67% of Michigan families who supported this bill," said Steve Yencich, President/CEO of the hotel association. "It's also tremendous news for tourism operators across the state and provides a real boost to this state's second largest industry," added Yencich.
Economic projections validated by Michigan State University indicate that the legislation will generate an additional $132 million in economic activity and produce $10 million in new tax revenues to the state.
"This bill was overwhelmingly supported by voters; and will generate more jobs and investment in tourism. That's good news for families, our industry and Michigan's economy," said Yencich. "In this case, doing what voters wanted was not only good politics, it was sound public policy. We thank and commend Representative Gaffney, along with Senate and House leadership and all legislators who voted for this bill," concluded Yencich.
