NYSHTA Names Michael Tompkins, 2007 Outstanding Tourism Executive of the Year

ONEIDA NATION HOMELANDS, NY, April 25, 2007. Michael Tompkins, vice president of hotel operations for the Oneida Indian Nation's Turning Stone Resort and Casino, was named 2007 Outstanding Tourism Executive of the Year by the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association (NYSHTA).
Tompkins was one of three Turning Stone hospitality professionals who were finalists for the association's "Stars of the Industry" awards, which were announced at a banquet in Tarrytown April 23. Christina Tierney, front office manager of The Lodge, was a finalist for the "Outstanding Manager/Supervisor" award for hotels with 150 rooms or fewer, and Hotel Concierge Lynsie Haist was a finalist for "Outstanding Lodging Employee" award for hotels with 151 or more. The winners in Tierney's and Haist's categories were from AAA Five Diamond properties.
Tompkins said it was gratifying to see Turning Stone professionals compete with those from places like the Ritz-Carlton in New York City. "I was extremely proud to be there with Christina and Lynsie, who, to me, are shining examples of what the hospitality industry should be," he said.
He also praised the rest of the staff at Turning Stone, noting that the quality of guest service depends on front-line workers. "I'm happy to accept the award, but it's really an honor for the staff," Tompkins said. "It's their hard work and dedication that makes Turning Stone so highly regarded among our guests and in the industry."
Tompkins is responsible for the daily operations of the resort' four hotels, two spas, two fitness clubs, retail, facilities and security. He oversaw the design, completion and opening of Skan'a Spa last year, and, since he joined Turning Stone, both The Lodge and The Tower have earned Four Diamond ratings from AAA.
Before joining Turning Stone in 2004, he was director of health and healing and associate managing director at the award-winning Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires, where he became known nationwide as an expert on wellness, fitness, and the spa industry. He now lives in Clinton and Saratoga Springs.
