2009 Zagat Survey Includes Sacramento
For the first time ever, Sacramento^1s dining scene received recognition from the internationally recognized Zagat Survey. Sacramento^1s top 20 restaurants, ranked by local consumers, are featured in Zagat^1s 2009 America^1s Top Restaurants Survey. The restaurants that appear in the 2009 survey include Biba Restaurant, Bidwell Street Bistro, Boulevard Bistro, Ella Dining Room & Bar, Firehouse Restaurant, Frank Fat's, Hawks, The Kitchen, Kru, La Bonne Soupe Caf'e, Lemon Grass Restaurant, Mason's, Mikuni Sushi, Mulvaney's Building & Loan, Osteria Fasulo, Paragary's Bar & Oven, Tower Caf'e, Tuli Bistro, Waterboy Restaurant, and Zocalo. The California Hall of Fame Opens December 2008
Conceived by First Lady Maria Shriver, the California Hall of Fame was established in 2006 with the California Museum to honor legendary individuals and families who embody California's innovative spirit and have made their mark on history. The 2008 Hall of Fame inductees were just announced: Dave Brubeck, Jane Fonda, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Robert Graham, Quincy Jones, Jack LaLanne, Dorthea Lange, Julia Morgan, Jack Nicholson, Linus Pauling, Leland Stanford and Alice Waters. The exhibit features artifacts personally loaned by the inductees, their families and organizations, including many items that have never been exhibited before. Previous inductees include Tiger Woods, Walt Disney, Ronald Reagan, Robert Mondavi, Elizabeth Taylor, Steve Jobs, Sally Ride, Amelia Earhardt, John Wayne, Billie Jean King, Alice Walker and Clint Eastwood. www.californiamuseum.org
Lance Armstrong Competes in AMGEN Tour of California
Sacramento is the start and Stage 1 finish of this 700-mile 8-day world class sporting event on February 14, 2009. Lance Armstrong will make his first U.S. racing debut since coming out of retirement. The heart pumping action and excitement of professional bicycle stage racing will take California by storm with the AMGEN Tour. Watch the intense sprint for the finish, the traditional awards ceremony and jersey presentation or join in the free race day festival including a health and fitness expo, cancer awareness education and bike safety. Major Space Exhibit Lands in Sacramento
"Space: A Journey to Our Future" is touring major science centers and air and space museums around the country and the Aerospace Museum in Sacramento will be its only California stop from February 9 through September 6, 2009. The exhibit is created to ignite the desire for space exploration and discovery, sparking imaginations and inspiring new generations of explorers. "SPACE" uses immersive scenic elements, the most advanced interactive exhibits and state-of-the-art projection and audio technology to bring this epic story to life.
Interactive experiences vary by venue and may include: rocks from the lunar surface; Columbia Shuttle tiles; Mars Rover model; exploring a future lunar base while walking through a full-size space living habitat and work pod; first-hand look at a wide range of artifacts from the space program; look into the future of our exploration of the universe in a 360-degree theater; step on the "Moon Scale" to establish your weight on the moon. www.discovergold.org/space
Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibit Opens at the California Museum
The exhibit commemorates the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. After the exhibit premieres at the Library of Congress in February 2009, it will be at the California Museum from June 22 to August 22, 2009. Sacramento is currently the only scheduled stop on the West Coast. The exhibit will feature a wide array of ephemera dealing with Lincoln's life and legacy including iconic material donated by the Lincoln family, such as the contents of his pockets on the night he was assassinated. www.californiamuseum.org.
Cosmopolitan Cabaret Opened in September 2008
With the re-emerging vitality of Downtown Sacramento and the desire to create a perfect environment for intimate musical theatre, the producer of Music Circus and Broadway Sacramento opened the Cosmopolitan Cabaret, a 208 -seat upscale, yet casual space. The Cabaret will allow audience members the comfort of either table seating or bar-style seating where they can enjoy cocktails and refreshments during the performance in modern metropolitan surroundings. The Cabaret shares the ground floor of the building at 10th and K streets with Cosmo, a new restaurant. After the show, you'll be able to head upstairs to a posh new nightclub, Social. Luxury Hotel Opened on Sacramento River
Le Rivage Hotel opened in February 2008 just south of downtown Sacramento. The 101-room Tuscan inspired hotel has a spa, pool, bocce ball court, bicycle rentals and 1,500 foot boat dock. www.lerivagehotel.com
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) Starts Major Expansion
Sacramento International Airport broke ground in August 2008 on a $ 1.28 billion expansion expected to open in late 2011. The program will ultimately replace Terminal B - the original terminal that opened in 1967 - with the following:
o LEED three-story terminal complex served by a two-level roadway
o Automated people mover to maintain customer convenience
o LEED airside concourse that increases the total number of gates at SMF by 9
o Extensive concessions program
o New parking garage.
