Jamaica Sees Increased Air Traffic

. October 14, 2008

JAMAICA, February 13, 2006. Jamaica is seeing a great increase in visitors this winter accompanied by increased air traffic from major U.S. markets. This includes increased airlift on carriers such as Delta Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines as well as newcomers to the market, including Spirit Airlines. The airlift, which accounts for 70% of the island's tourist arrivals from the U.S., has motivated expansions of Jamaica's airports in both Montego Bay and Kingston.

Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay

A new wing was recently unveiled at Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport which also features a modernized and extended Arrivals and Customs Halls. Expansions of the baggage claim facilities and the Ground Transportation Hall are also completed as well as a new Immigration Hall and renovations of several gates. New food and retail concessions have also been added.

"Our tourism product is being constantly upgraded and in less than two years, the international airport in Montego Bay will be unveiled as a first-class international gateway to the world," stated Paul Pennicook, Director of Tourism for the Jamaica Tourist Board. These expansions and renovations of both, will improve the facilities to cope with the increased volume of travelers Mr. Pennicook added.

Norman Manley International Airport, Kingston

Major expansions of the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, which began last summer, will improve the passenger facilities and services. A redeveloped ticketing area will accommodate 54 check-in desks to support the increased number of airlines and promote efficiency. A significantly improved area will also be available for Passport Control and Security Check. VIP and airline lounges will also be in place as well as a new Departure Lounge with retails offerings and facilities to comfortably accommodate passengers. The existing Arrivals and Departures pier will be redeveloped to provide a two-level structure to accommodate the separation of arriving and departing passengers. A 30,000 square foot warehouse is also being converted to a new car park and common waiting areas.
