Japan Considers Casinos for Tourism
TOKYO, Japan, February 27, 2006. Japan's ruling political party is considering legalising casinos in a bid to attract more overseas tourists, according to the Kyodo News agency.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) may encourage removing Japan's ban on gambling spots, after Singapore uplifted a ban last year in order to boost tourism. Casinos could attract many tourists and help to boost the economy, an unnamed lawmaker on an LDP subcommittee on gambling was quoted by Kyodo as saying.
The subcommittee is looking to produce an interim report in April. This will outline possible legal changes and what casinos would be like if they are legalised. Over five million foreign tourists visited Japan in 2003, according to government statistics. Tokyo is keen to increase its tourist arrivals to ten million by 2010.
