Canadian Professional Golf Tour Chooses El Cid
MAZATL'AN, Mexico (April 12, 2006) - Top golf professionals from 15 countries, mainly the United States and Canada, will return to El Cid Golf & Country Club, Mazatl'an, Mexico, for the 2006 Corona Mazatl'an Classic, May 8 - 14.
The Mazatl'an tournament is the only Canadian Professional Golf Tour stage to be played in Mexico this year. Eliminatory rounds will unfold, May 11 - 13, with the participation of 156 professional players, including 24 Mexican golfers considered to be the best in the country. The final round will be played, May 14, with a purse of $125,000.00 USD, says Francisco Lavat, general director, Championship Management Company of Mexico. The tournament's technical aspects (e.g. rules, tee times, flags and scores) will be managed and sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Golf Tour in its entirety, Lavat added.
The Tournament Players Association is the governing body for the Canadian Professional Golf Tour with tournament operations in Canada, the United States and Mexico. This not-for-profit association represents more than 200 members from around the globe, and as an associate member of the International Federation of PGA Tours, official World Golf Ranking points are awarded to the top six finishers at each event.
Some of the most recognized names in professional golf have competed on the Canadian Tour, including 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir, a seven-time PGA Tour champion who has won more money on the circuit than any other Canadian in history. Weir, a native of Bright's Grove, Ontario, won Canadian Rookie of the Year honors in 1993 before winning the Canadian Tour money crown four years later, thanks to victories at the Canadian Masters and BC Tel Pacific Open.
It came as no surprise that the Canadian Professional Golf Tour organizing committee chose Mazatl'an for one of the Canadian Professional Golf Tour stages again this year. Mazatl'an has a reputation as an ideal destination to host international sporting and special events. Such events include Carnaval, the third largest Mardi Gras in the Americas after New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, which attracts 300,000 - 400,000 revelers annually from all of Mexico and abroad. The city also hosts the Gran Maraton Pacifico, which draws 8,000 runners of all experience levels each year. Runners can run a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or full marathon in the beautiful city of Mazatl'an, while experiencing cool ocean breeze and miles of golden sand beaches.
