Educator Anthony G. Marshall Dies at 67
DECEMBER 6, 2006. Anthony G. Marshall, former president of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, was a widely known and respected columnist, educator, lecturer, lawyer, and hospitality management professional. He accepted a leadership position as president of the Educational Institute in 1998 after 27 years as dean of the School of Hospitality Management at Florida International University in Miami, where he also previously served as founding assistant dean. Friends and colleagues remember him for his collegial leadership style, passion for the hospitality industry, broad knowledge, trademark bowtie, and signature wit.
At EI, as leader of the world's most recognized source of education for the hospitality industry, Marshall viewed his role in a personal way: "It's an opportunity for me to serve an industry that has served me so well over the years," he said in accepting the position.
Marshall was recipient of a commendation medal from the United States Air Force, the Diplomate award from the National Restaurant Association, Lamp of Knowledge from AH&LA, and Innkey award from the Greater Miami and Beaches Hotel Association. At Florida International University, he was the senior dean and publisher of the FIU Hospitality Review.
Prior to his tenure as Dean of the School of Hospitality Management, Marshall was a hospitality management consultant in New York City. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel Administration from the University of New Hampshire and a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University, College of Law. He was a member of the New York Bar Association. His education followed four years of service in the United States Air Force, where he managed officers' clubs in the United States and Europe.
As an author, Marshall entertained and informed countless readers through two books: Don't Lose Your Hotel by Accident, published by Advanstar Communications of Cleveland; and Hotel Restaurant and Travel Law, with co-authors Karen L. Morris and Norman G. Cournoyer, published by Delmar Publishers of New York.
Marshall's semi-monthly column, "At Your Risk," published in Hotel & Motel Management magazine was a favorite of hospitality professionals. It focused on accident prevention, security and other hospitality management issues, and displayed Marshall's signature common sense, good nature, and wit.
In 2005, Marshall resigned from EI to return to academia, accepting the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association Professorship in Lodging Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. After courageously battling brain cancer, Marshall passed away at his home in Orlando, Florida on December 6, 2006.
Marshall was born in Rochester, New York on April 1, 1939, and is survived by his younger brother, Robert. He will be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues, students and readers. A memorial service will be held locally at the University of Central Florida in January. Please contact the UCF Rosen School of Hospitality for further details.
