Caribbean Plans to Wow Big Apple
NEW YORK, NY, June 8, 2006. Pulsating music and lively cultural entertainment will fill the air in New York City during Caribbean Week 2006, when entertainers from the Caribbean as well as local performers plan to expose New Yorkers to Caribbean culture at its finest.
Highlights of the entertainment that will be featured during Caribbean Week 2006 include:
--Celebrity Invitational Cricket Match at Idlewild Park, Queens June 10, 11:00 am - 6:30 pm
--Half-time entertainment will include New York's own New Kingston Band (featuring reggae music), Gowanus Wildcats Step Team (from Brooklyn) and Tanya Maryoung, Gospel, R & B, and inspirational singer.
--The OECS Music Legends Concert & Cocktail Reception at Tribeca Performing Arts Center June 10, 8:30 pm
Featuring legendary musicians from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) including long-time favorites and current stars from the Caribbean. Performers include Da Bhann of Antigua & Barbuda; Kevin Little of St. Vincent & The Grenadines; King Short Shirt of Antigua and Barbuda; Arrow of Montserrat and Ellie Matt of St. Kitts. --Caribbean Gospelfest at Hanson Place United Methodist Church, Brooklyn June 11, 4:30 - 7:30 pm
The concert will feature long-time favorites and current star performers from the Caribbean including: Jamaican gospel star Carlene Davis as well as Joseph Niles of Barbados; Harrella Goodwin of St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin Islands; The Bahamas Praise Team of Nassau, Bahamas; Wendy Mitchell and Wayne Johnson of Trinidad and Tobago; The New Life Ambassadors of St. Vincent & the Grenadines; and the Chapman Brothers of Jamaican and Trinidadian descent.
--Caribbean Fair at South Street Seaport Piers 16 & 17, NYC June 13, 10:00 am - 7:00 pm
Musical performance highlights include the Turks & Caicos Police Band; Da Bhann from Antigua & Barbuda; Junior Lion from St. Martin; Leon & the Peoples Band from the United States; Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic; Ken Isles from St. Vincent & the Grenadines; and Freddie McGregor and Son from Jamaica. Additionally, dance performances by Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as well as a Junkanoo presentation by the Bahamas will captivate on-lookers during the Caribbean Fair. The evening will be capped off by Jamaican reggae legend Half Pint.

Delighting in the Caribbean's 'love affair' with couples, Caribbean Week 2006 will present two 'live' Caribbean Weddings sponsored by the Cond'e Nast Bridal Group. Legendary Reggae Ambassador Freddie McGregor will be on-hand to serenade both couples to make their wedding day even more memorable.
--33rd Annual Governments of the Caribbean State Ball at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, NYC June 16, 7:00 pm - Midnight
Youth Waves, St. Maarten/St. Martin's hottest band, will entertain guests throughout the evening with its unique blend of Reggae, Zouk, Soca, Calypso and R&B. Other entertainers at the Ball will include: Ken Isles, one of St. Vincent & the Grenadines' most versatile and experienced pannists; The Dominican Folkloric Ballet of New York featuring folklore and typical dances embracing and expressing the Dominican joy through the Merengue; and The Dance Company of Puerto Rico that will present an array of Puerto Rican dances, as well as musicians, singers, and a master of ceremonies.
