Harbor Police Officers Honored for Life-Saving Actions

. October 14, 2008

SAN DIEGO, CA, December 14, 2006. Life-saving commendations and medals were presented to three Harbor Police officers at the December 5 Board meeting. The officers are credited with saving the life of a traveler who collapsed at San Diego International Airport on October 16, 2006. San Diego Harbor Police Chief Kirk Sanfilippo and Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Robert "Rocky" Spane bestowed the honors to Sergeant Chuck Marks and Officers Mark Faucher and Shannon Larson.

Sergeant Marks was contacted by a citizen on October 16 while on duty at the airport. The citizen reported that a man had collapsed in front of the baggage claim area at Terminal One. After arriving at the scene, Sergeant Marks called for an ambulance and for Harbor Police to bring an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Less than a minute later, Officers Faucher and Larson arrived with an AED unit. The AED indicated that the man had no heart activity and gave the instruction to administer a shock. Once a shock was deployed, heart and respiratory activity were detected. Officer Faucher assisted with keeping the man's airway clear until paramedics arrived to take over.

This is the third life-saving commendation received by Officer Mark Faucher during his ten-year career as a Harbor Police Officer. Just last March he saved the life of another traveler at San Diego International Airport. For these actions he received a shirt bar bearing three crosses to symbolize the three lives he has saved.

The San Diego Harbor Police Department was honored by the San Diego County Law Enforcement Foundation for their extraordinary efforts at saving lives through the use of AEDs at the Foundation's annual awards dinner on November 11. At that event, donations were raised to fund five AEDs for five police departments throughout the county.

The San Diego Harbor Police is the law enforcement arm of the Port of San Diego. The department is made up of 146 sworn officers and 27 civilian personnel who provide law enforcement, marine fire-fighting services, airport services, public safety and Homeland Security throughout the tidelands and San Diego Bay. Harbor Police Officers patrol San Diego International Airport under contract with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The department works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and terrorism task forces to develop solutions to a variety of Port security issues.
