Anthony G. Marshall Remembered

. October 14, 2008

DECEMBER 16, 2006. Anthony G. Marshall, J.D., CHA, CHE, former president of the Educational Institute (EI) of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), passed away at his home in Orlando, Fla., on December 6, 2006, after a long battle with brain cancer.

Marshall was a widely-known and respected columnist, educator, lecturer, lawyer, and hospitality management professional. He accepted a leadership position at EI in 1998 after 15 years as dean of the School of Hospitality Management at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, where he also previously served as founding assistant dean. Additionally, he was the senior dean and publisher of the FIU Hospitality Review. In 2005, Marshall resigned from EI to return to academia, accepting the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association Professorship in Lodging Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

'Last week, the industry lost a well-respected academic and industry leader who will forever be remembered for the many contributions he made that helped define not only EI as the premier source for delivering quality hospitality education and training to hospitality schools and industries worldwide, but also had a positive impact on the industry as a whole,' said AH&LA President/CEO Joseph A. McInerney, CHA. 'Friends and colleagues remember him for his collegial leadership style, passion for the hospitality industry, broad knowledge, trademark bowtie, and signature wit. He will be deeply missed by those of us who were privileged to know him well.'

During his tenure, Marshall's leadership and vision increased EI's revenue, significantly reduced its debt, and created a model that enables EI to have a balanced budget, while continuously updating existing material and creating new products. Marshall also expanded the academic and industry international markets, which have become important contributors to EI's revenue and growth.

Marshall was recipient of a commendation medal from the United States Air Force, the Diplomate award from the National Restaurant Association, Lamp of Knowledge from AH&LA, and Innkey award from the Greater Miami and Beaches Hotel Association.

Prior to his tenure as dean of the School of Hospitality Management, Marshall was a hospitality management consultant in New York City. He was awarded a bachelor of science degree in hotel administration from the University of New Hampshire and a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University, College of Law. He was a member of the New York Bar Association. His education followed four years of service in the United States Air Force, where he managed officers' clubs in the United States and Europe.

As an author, Marshall entertained and informed countless readers through two books: 'Don't Lose Your Hotel by Accident,' published by Advanstar Communications of Cleveland; and 'Hotel Restaurant and Travel Law,' with co-authors Karen L. Morris and Norman G. Cournoyer, published by Delmar Publishers of New York. Marshall's semi-monthly column, "At Your Risk," published in Hotel & Motel Management magazine was a favorite of hospitality professionals.

Marshall was born in Rochester, N.Y. on April 1, 1939, and is survived by his younger brother, Robert.

Several memorials have been planned. A private family ceremony will be held in New Hampshire in January. On Saturday, January 13, 2007, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando hosts a memorial service at 9 a.m. in the Darden Auditorium.
