Sunday Showcase at Waikiki Beach Walk® Entertainment Line-up for May and June

HONOLULU, OAHU, HI - May 7, 2010 - Waikiki Beach Walk's popular Sunday Showcase continues through May and June with a line-up of artists and groups highlighting Hawaii's diverse music offerings. From traditional to contemporary Hawaiian, from jazz to R&B and much more, this free weekly music program takes place at Waikiki Beach Walk's outdoor plaza stage every Sunday (weather permitting) from 5:00pm to 6:00 pm and draws both locals and visitors who gather on the lawn to relax and enjoy some of the best island performers.

MAY SUNDAY SHOWCASE

May 9 - Ukulele Jazz with Benny Chong and Byron Yasui
Ukulele Jazz is a jazz duo comprised of ukulele masters Benny Chong and Byron Yasui. Both accomplished and well respected musicians, Benny performs on the concert ukulele and for years performed as guitarist/vocalist with Don Ho and the Aliis. Byron, who performs on the bass, is a former bassist with the Honolulu Symphony and currently serves as a Professor of Music at the University of Hawaii . He is occasionally featured on solo ukulele and joins in ukulele duets with Benny. An Ukulele Jazz performance is a tour de force dedicated to the art of playing ukulele in the jazz genre.

May 16 - Alan Akaka and The Islanders
The music of the Islanders will take you back to the days of Territorial Hawaii when the pace was gentler and the islands tunes wafted through the night air. Sweetness and swing, nostalgia and memories -- The Islanders perform the “classic” music of our paradise isles. Favorites include Waikiki, Blue Hawaii, Beyond the Reef, Ke Aloha, Holo Holo Kaa, Moonlight and Shadows, Sweet Leilani, Hoomanawanui, Lani, Sands of Waikiki, Aloha Oe, Hoomalimali E and many others.

May 23 - Indigineous
Indigineous group members Sam Ah Mook Sang, Keoni Ku and Jon Alcordo are island entertainers whose Hawaiian style arrangements and exquisite talent for harmonizing have been enjoyed by visitors and local residents alike.

May 30 - Halau Na Pua Mai Ka Lani
Halau Na Pua Mai Ka Lani is under the direction of kumu hula Kale Pawai. This non-competitive hula halau (school) have been performing both the ancient (Kahiko) and modern ('auana) styles of hula since 2003. Kumu Kale is proud to share the art of hula with everyone who visits Waikiki Beach Walk.

JUNE SUNDAY SHOWCASE

June 6 - Corey Funai
Corey Funai can often be heard with his band Bluzilla on Hawaii Public Radio and in clubs around Honolulu. He also occasionally teams up with this father and noted guitar player Jimmy Funai, ,or he gets together with their band Jazujin (Japanese for men of jazz). We are proud to welcome Corey's special blend to of “bluesic” to the Sunday Showcase.

June 13 - Halau Hula O Hokulani
Halau Hula O Hokulani (Wahine) is led by Na Kumu Hula Hokulani De Rego and Larry De Rego who hail from Waipahu, Oahu and have been steady performers throughout Hawaii's hula landscape. They've been invited to participate in hula festivals throughout Hawaii and around the world and are true representatives of hula expressed through their foundational disciplines of our Hawaiian dance.

June 20 - Aunty Nikki Hines
One of Hawaii's living musical treasures, Aunty Nikki Hines graces the Waikiki Beach Walk Plaza Stage for a special sunset performance of Hawaiian music. A one-of-a-kind afternoon of Hawaiian music, dance, storytelling and aloha!

June 27 - Jimmy Funai
A well respect musician throughout Hawaii's jazz and blues circles and recognized as one of Hawaii's greatest guitarist, Jimmy Funai is seen as a musical utilitarian. He's performed on national TV shows with greats like Dolly Parton and continues to play locally with jazz luminaries such as Jimmy Borges and the Invitations. We're please to have him bring his remarkable musical history to the Sunday Showcase.
