February & March - Packed with Excitement on Guam

TUMON, Guam, Janaury 16, 2007. This year, your New Year's Resolution should include a visit to Guam, where there is always something happening for all visitors to enjoy. From martial arts exhibits to drag races, from a day of flying kites to a weekend at Gef Pa'go for the Chamorro Dance Festival, Guam is the place to relax, unwind, and have a great time.

The month of February is a busy one, with many major events happening. The events kick off, literally, on February 3 and 4 at the Wettengel Rugby Field in Dededo during the 10th Annual Budweiser "True Grit" Guam Rugby International Tournament. This hard hitting event includes the Men's 10s tournament along with the 2nd Annual Guam Visitors Bureau Asian Women's 7s Competition featuring the top Women's 7 teams from Asia. The following weekend, February 9 - 11, one of Guam's most exciting cultural events officially begins. Held annually over two weekends in February, the Fiestan Dinana' Minagof (Chamorro Dance Festival) starts at Gef Pa'go Chamorro Cultural Village in the scenic village of Inarajan in southern Guam. The following weekend, February 17 and 18, the festival wraps up at the Pa'a Village on Tumon Bay. Sponsored by the Gef Pa'go Chamorro Cultural Village and Pa'a Taotao Tano', this annual Dance Festival is a showcase of Guam's customs and heritage.

The internationally acclaimed Shaolin Warriors bring a dazzling display of fighting and weapons mastery to Guam with their Legends of Kung Fu tour, which also takes place the weekend of February 9th through the 11th at the UOG Fieldhouse. Direct from China, the Legends of Kung Fu features twenty-four authentic Shaolin Monks who captivate audiences with feats of daring and extraordinary strength. The Legends of Kung Fu combines artistry with martial arts for a performance that the whole family will enjoy and remember.

The weekend of February 17th and 18th is another full of incredible events, festivals, and fun. The Guam Sailing Federation will hold the Guam Sailing Festival - Cocos Cup Windsurfing & Goodwill Regatta in the Apra Harbor and Cocos Lagoon. Hot Import Nights, the world's largest car show, comes to Guam on Saturday, February 17th at the Guam International Raceway Park. HIN gives both local and off-island talent an opportunity to put top show cars in the spotlight! Hot Import Nights will also include musical entertainment, beautiful women, motorsports professionals, exhibitors and lot's more family fun.

This is definitely a weekend for car enthusiasts as Hit Radio 100 revives the longest running car show on Guam, Auto Jam. Held in the ballfield at the Paseo de Susana in Hagatna, Auto Jam 2007 reinvents itself with a focus on "old school" classics and introduces the Rick & Ronnie Big Chili Cookout. Food, entertainment, and some of the hottest rides around make for a good time.

This same weekend, the skies will come alive with a thousand colors as kites of all shapes and sizes take to the air at the Kites for Wishes Festival at the Asan Memorial Beach Park. This is a fundraising event to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Guam. Kite experts from 14 different countries will be participating, including the Philippines, Japan, Canada and the U.S., and will conduct exhibitions and demonstrations. This colorful event is open to the public and visitors, kite optional.

February 24 and 25, its Drift Drag Xtreme, featuring the Signal Auto Race Team from Japan. A five dollar admission fee gets you in to the event to be held at the 76/Circle K Drag Strip. Saturday's events will include drag races by Guam's Pro Class between drifting sessions and on Sunday, it's the Vertical Productions/Signal Auto Drift Camp. March is Chamorro Month, an island-wide celebration of Guam's traditions, customs, and culture featuring a series of events that will leave a memorable impression on all visitors. Not to be missed are the Discovery Day festivities in the village of Umatac, which take place over several weekends in March and commemorate Ferdinand Magellan's historic landing on Guam. Special events include a re-enactment of Magellan sailing in to Umatac's harbor, water sports and exhibitions, games, refreshments, and entertainment.

The Guam Running Club will create a piece of history themselves as they hold the 36th Annual Hafa Marathon. This event is one of the island's oldest running events and participated in on an international level. March 11th marks the 4th Annual Xterra Guam Off-Road Triathlon, combining a non-wetsuit 1km swim in the ocean behind the USO in Piti, a 27km mountain bike ride up Nimitz Hill and around the Guam High School area, climbing further into Guam's technical terrain atop Mt. Alutom, into the Mannengon Hills before returning to the transition area in Piti. The triathlon finishes with a 5k trail run that meanders in and around the village of Piti. The Guam Visitors Bureau will select the next Miss Guam Tourism at the 6th Annual Miss Guam Tourism Pageant to be held at the University of Guam Fieldhouse on March 24th. The lovely contestants will vie for the crown and a chance to represent Guam internationally. Contestants represent the very best of young Chamorro women and final selection is based on brains, beauty, and an obvious appreciation and understanding of Guam's identity, culture, and history.

Every Friday from 6 - 8 pm, the young ladies from Island Girl Power, a non-profit organization focused on maintaining the self esteem of young girls, gives a Capoeira Mandinga demonstration at the Acanta Mall in Tumon. Capoeira Mandinga is a specialized form of martial arts from Brazil that combines gymnastics, dance, & music with self defense. Vistitors and residents alike are entertained with the impressive skills of Guam's young women and everyone is welcome.
