Following two years of extensive renovations, The Grand, Sofitel's historic and iconic Amsterdam hotel, officially became Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. This is the brand's second Legend property in the world and first in Europe. Legend locations are housed in registered buildings with at least 100 years of history. The five-star luxury hotel features 177 rooms including 52 suites, an award-winning seafood restaurant and an urban So SPA.
Since 1578, The Grand has welcomed celebrated authors, actors, ambassadors and heads of state. It served as the city's convent headquarters and hosted royalty including Prince William of Orange and French Queen Maria de Medici. In 1966, Princess Beatrix and Claus Von Amsberg were married in the Council Chamber. The building was restored as The Grand Hotel in 1992.
In 2008, Sofitel commissioned French interior architect Sybille de Margerie to lead the dramatic redesign. De Margerie's inspiration came from the colors of the famous mural by COBRA artist Karel Appel, displayed in the hotel's restaurant. In addition, she utilized brick for some walls to tie in the Dutch Classicist style. For the rooms, de Margerie collaborated closely with students of the renowned Eindhoven Design Academy.
The hotel's 52 suites have undergone complete transformations. The Legendary Imperial Suites and Suite l'Appartements cater to elite clientele who frequent the hotel. The ultra-exclusive Imperial Suites include butler service, a spacious lounge, a bedroom with adjacent guest room, two bathrooms, a Hammam, and a large dining area. The Suite l'Appartements have individual entrances offering the privacy and seclusion expected from many of The Grand's famous guests.
Bridges, the hotel's award-winning restaurant, is located in the space which formerly served as the canteen of the Town Hall. Home to the first raw bar in the Netherlands, it's there where Chef de Cuisine, Aurelien Poirot prepares fresh Dutch fish with a French twist. Guests can dine in the Restaurant, the Raw Bar, the Cocktail Bar, the Vinotheque or the courtyard garden.
Guests can also enjoy the hotel's library and refurbished So FIT fitness center.
Highlighting iconic, historical properties throughout the world, Sofitel Legends blend the French roots with the local culture of each property. Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi became the first Legend in July 2009. Sofitel Old Cataract Aswan and Sofitel Cartagena Santa Clara will launch as Legends in late 2011.
